I've been using Calamine lotion and it only works for a few minutes and then back to driving me nuts! It should go away without a doctor shouldnt it? Any other ideas?

Help for poison ivy:
cold compresses
ivy rid (available in your local drug store)
otc benadryl pills
aveeno oatmeal baths

If you really can't stand the itching or the rash is not improving, see your doctor, you may need to be put on a cortisone product to get it under control.

All you have to do is take an oatmeal bath and when you get out the tub don't rub yourself dry pat yourself down with a soft towel. Then rub on some Calamine lotion only where you itching at. That what I did when I had poison oak and I slept like a baby all through the day and night.

My son is horribly allergic to poison ivy - to the point that he's had to go to the Dr for steroid shots when he's broke out. If it isn't bad enough for the shots what his pediatrician has said is to take anything with an antihistimine - Benadryl, Actifed, etc. - oatmeal baths and a 10% Cortizone cream/lotion. Also wash, in hot water, any sheets & towels you come in contact with until the rash is finished oozing as well as throughly washing any clothing. If your things aren't washed well the oils can stay on them for years causing continuous outbreaks....that one's from a nurse. Your rash is ONLY contagious as long as it's oozing.

You don't say how long you've had poison ivy. If it has been more than a few days and it is not going away, then definitely see a doctor. You could also try soaking in cool water in a bathtub.

soak in a tub with oatmeal.....put a cup or so of oatmeal in a nylon, tie it off and let it float in the water...this will help calm the itching...take benadryl for the itch and if it gets too bad, you may need to see a doctor and they will give you a shot to help it clear up, but it does take a few days or more if it's bad. Good luck, try to stay calm if possible, try and think past the itch.

I have recently had PI. When i get it I put alcohol on it when it itches, it stings a little but it stops itching. The alcohol will also dry it up and keep it from oozing. The oozing is what causes the spreading to other part of your body and others.
