I have tried- ignoring, being nice, severing relations and even telling him that his drama hurts his family who loves him... still it never ends. My father is so self absorbed and determined to ruin his life that It is sad to watch.

Parents are human too. We disappoint our children, but most of the time not as much as our children disappoint us. You can't stop your parents from ruining their lives, but you have no right to do anything to add to the trouble they are already experiencing. You are their child. Love them and be there for them when they need you.

I play this game with my dad where I'll call and leave a message and see how long it takes for him to call back. It's usually about a month. Other than that I expect the worse every time I hang out with him, and sometimes I'm suprised and it's great.

Hard to say how you can make a difference . But just make sure that your needs are taken care of and make sure the it does not become a family tradition . Good luck and best wishes..

Maybe you could try growing up and learning that parents owe you nothing,since they gave you life.
Try being a loving and even obedient daughter as you should,and not so judgemental of your elders.

try to look deep into what is ailing him. your initial reaction to his problem is not helping him at all. every man has his own weakness and it is up to him to handle it well. some men like your dad has a problem he can not solve by himself and needs someones help to do it. show him that you care instead of ignoring him and if nothing works get some help from phsyciatrists who are professionals in this field.

realize they are just human beings and not the perfect things you wish they were. once you do that, you will appreciate what they have to offer you...even if it mean watching your father do something that is not to your taste.

Cherish them, they brought you to this world. Please don't let yourself down by waiting for them to make you happy. Organize your life so you don't depend on them so much. Some people are just not born to be parents but that does not mean that they don't love you.
