a whip DOES NOT MAKE A HORSE FASTER!! It encourages a horse to run - and many times the whip is shaken at them without hitting them but appears to be hitting. There is NO way to beat a horse into running faster. There would be a lot less claimers and a lot more Kentucky Derby and Breeders Cup horses if a whip alone made a horse run fast. They have to have the talent and without that no whip in the world will MAKE a horse run faster. No it is not cruelty. Using it too much many horses quit - not to mention riders being fined

Yes a whip does make the horse run faster. No it is not cruel.
The jockey m,ay not even touch the horse with it. Many times they flip it in the horses line of sight and he will speed up.
Part of the race the jockey is holding the horse back so he has enough stamina to run the last part fast. So when he lets go he will pop the horse or show him the whip.
The whip has a flat leather piece on the end of it and when you slap it on something it makes a loud popping noise. It does not hurt stings a little but the noise is really what you are looking for.
They check to see if the horses have been injured durring the race. After the race the horses are gone over to make sure their tattoo numbers match and they are drug tested. So an offical puts thier hands on the horse and checks them over. If they see abouse they will turn it in.

It is simply a motivational tool. If the horse isn't fast to begin with he won't go any faster with or without the whip. But it is NOT cruel. When the jock does use it, it is sometimes merely a tap to move the horse or a small sting to give the horse the go ahead. It does not hurt the horse. You have obviously spent very little time around horses or you would know that they bite, kick, shove and nip at each other just being social. A little flap of leather is nothing to these guys.

in horse racing? no its not. You have to worry about maneuvering a 1,000 lb horse with a rider in and out amongst other horses. plus the whip is used as a signal. the horse knows what part of the race it is in from the whip. sometimes you will see the jockey flip it by his eye to signal him to go. even if the whip isnt used, the jockey carries one just in case. and all trainers have their riders carry a whip dring training because a horse that has never seen a whip in his life wil most likely panic and can cause a huge track disaster. the Jockey Club keeps an eye on whip use and if it is suspected that the whip was used abusively, then the jock's license is suspended and a proper investigation is launched. From there the license can be suspeneded definately or indefinately. A jockey on a suspended license can race at very few tracks. I cant think of any tracks that dont require one.

a whip is an aid- no more. It helps a rider to ask the horse to respond. Whips are used in all facets of horse riding, and yes, in the wrong hands it can do damage (more mental than physical), but so can many other things that people don't whinge about (Like badly fitting saddles, and bits that are too harsh). The fact is, any aid that we use with horses (our own body included) has the potential to cause great harm- it's up the individual to do the right thing.

A whip is a necessary tool that isn't just used for the horse. It is used by & for the Jockey to get the attention of the horse. Once you get their attention, you then can manuever them (hopefully) to a safer position, thus possibly saving yourself & the horse a deadly accident! There are not many other LEGAL ways to get a large animals attention. Electric shock works well, but it is against the rules to use it in a race.

I think you mean "whip" and YES, it makes horses go faster. It isn't animal cruelty because it doesn't hurt the horse. This question has already been answered, stop insisting that horseracing is a cruel sport.

no it isnt animal cruelity.horses determine a pecking order in a heard by kicking and biting each other. they kick and bite a lot harder then we could ever smack them on the but. how ever if you smack a horse in the face it will make them very head shy.and is cruelty.also smacking them on the but does make them go .faster. some only run as fast as they feel they need to not as fast as they can.i know when i was running awat from my grandma carring a switch i always found another gear!!

most people don't really whack them. if you wave the whip in front of the horse, he'll get the jockeys vibe. it looks like the jockeys are constantly whipping the horse in arace, but thats all of the 20 max horses. 1 horse gets whipped 7 times (id say) max a race.
