Strictly speaking Jesus was not from the seed of David. Because
he was born without a human father. David was a Jew or he was from the tribe of Judah(yahoodah(Judah) and yehoodi(descendents of Judah).
Mary was a Levite like Moses and Aaron. It is somewhat like Abraham not being a Jew but a Hebrew(descendent of Eber) and not being an Israelite(descendents of his son Jacob or Israel) and Moses being both a Hebrew and a Levite Israelite(descendent of Israel's son Levi. Did you think that?

answer to Who cares:
again another stupid answer. Jews are the descendents of Abraham's grandson Jacob.
There were Hebrews before Abraham. If your logic is correct then the Arabs(who are also descendants of Abraham) are Jews too.

answer to gratvol:
you are right in some sense. Nowadays all the descendents of the 12 tribes are labeled as Jew.
But that is a loose defination. Stricly speaking,
The word "Jew" or "Yahoodi" originates from "Judah" or "Yahoodah". So in a strict defination Jesus was not a Jew but a Levite.

If a person's mother is Jewish then they are Jewish. It doesn't matter who their father is, except for Kohanim.

Actually that is incorrect. Mary was also from the tribe of Judah, and a decendent of David. See Luke 3; Tradition (in the Catholic sense) attributes this lineage to Mary, and not strictly to Joseph.

The word "Jew" came from the territory of "Judah", and grew to include all of Isrealite ancestry, no matter to what ancestral tribe they belonged.

Yes, Jesus was Jewish.

you raise a good point but, the term Jew is not limited to the tribe of Judah. It is used generally to describe any person that is a member of the Jewish religion, that is why converts are also called Jews.

Added: how about as a compromise you call him an Israelite

What makes a person Jewish?
Main article: Who is a Jew?
According to traditional Jewish Law, someone is considered to be a Jew if he or she was born of a Jewish mother or converted in accord with Jewish Law. American Reform Judaism and British Liberal Judaism accept the child of one Jewish parent (father or mother) as Jewish if the parents raise the child as a Jew by Progressive standards. All mainstream forms of Judaism today are open to sincere converts.

Judaism maintains that one born Jewish or one who converted to Judaism, retains their status as a Jew forever. Rather, one who converts to another religion or is an atheist is considered to be a Jew not in good religious standing. How religious one is, in this sense, is only important in one's status in Jewish law. For example. a person denying the Jewish principles of faith may be considered a heretic, while still considered Jewish.

The question of what determines Jewish identity was given new impetus when, in the 1950s, David ben Gurion requested opinions on mihu Yehudi ("who is a Jew") from Jewish religious authorities and intellectuals worldwide. The question is far from settled within Israeli Politics, and occasionally resurfaces in Israeli politics.

I don't know where you got the idea that Mary was a Levite, I think you're confused with the fact that her sister Elizabeth married a Levite. Most people assume that the genealogy of Jesus recorded in Luke is from Mary's ancestry while that recorded in Matthew is of Joseph.

Also, Jesus was clearly accepted as the son of Mary and Joseph; therefore He clearly humbled himself of the appearance of their child. This is clearly shown in the following scripture.

Matthew 13
55"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"

Clearly he was considered to be of the same blood as his brethren, little did the people of Nazareth know.

Love your logic.

You mean if God interview, the result would not be Jewish. According to Jewish law, the mother determine membership not the father.

So next time, ask a rabbi about being Jewish, and see what he/she says.

But in answer to your question: Jesus was a Jew.

Jesus was a jew, because his mother was, regardless of who his father was. but you have a good point, because there were technically 12 tribes, none of which were called jew (but there was a tribe of Judah).

Mary was, and so was Joseph. Joseph was His legal father, that made Jesus his heir (and first born), also Mary was from the line of David. Jesus is covered either way.
