Sure the odds are awful. But you can't win if you don't play. I often buy a single ticket, realizing that if nothing else a little of that goes to schools in my state--so it isn't a total loss. I look at it as a voluntary tax. I was recently asked if I wanted to buy more, I said, "With odds like these, it won't be but by the grace of God that I won anyway."

Because the hope you get is worth the token amount you spend. The hours of fantasy thinking about what you'd do with the money are worth more than the money. And, even though the odds are against you, there is still a tiny remote chance that you will win.
I make 6 figures, and I still spend $4.00 a week even though I haven't won in the 25 years I have been playing for just those reasons.

Remember this, if you don't buy, you will never win. If you buy, you may win even though the chances are one in a million.

its an addiction. they believe that if they hit the lotto their life would be better then now, but most of the time after they win the money they would spend it all and would start to buy more lotto ticket.

same reason people spend money on arcade games, claw machines, carnival gmes etc...entertainment..you're mostly throwing away your money on those other things too...
