I have four children and liked the process of naming them. I tend to dislike strange or weirdly spelled names and picked at least one common name - they are Robert, Daniel, Michael, and Samantha. I picked the second name to honor an ancestor, using a grandmother or grandfather, and that pleases the kids too since they like their grandparents. Finally, I preferred not to saddle my kids with hyphenated names - what happens when Julia Barney-Smith marries Robert Small-Jones? My wife kept her maiden name (which I fully supported), but children need the father's last name if there is much hope of tracing the family tree a century from now.

Whatever you do, avoid names that sound like anything connected to sex or elimination (run all name candidates by a ditry-minded male friend just to be sure), as this will result in your kid being teased into oblivion at school. With at least one common (normal) name, a kid can easily avoid the teasing.

My children's names:

Robert Lawrence (Robert was my father's name and my name, and Lawrence has been my lifelong friend).

Daniel Justin (Daniel because my wife and I liked it, Justin because of my grandfather)

Michael Allyn (Michael because we liked it, Allyn for my wife's father)

Samantha Grace (Samantha because I've dreamt of that name since I was a boy, knowing I would finally have a daughter to pin it on, and Grace for my mother).

FYI, my son Daniel made me a grandfather a few months back and my granchild is named:

Nathaniel Craig (Nathaniel because they liked it, Craig to honor me)

Good luck!

while my husband and I were on a long car trip, I'd read out names while he was driving and then write down the ones we both liked. then, because there's 7 boys in my husband's family, we picked some boys' names we liked. we never got around to doing the girls' before I had the baby. lo and behold, I had a girl. LOL so when I was coherant enough, my husband got out the list at the hospital and we chose a name that happened to be my confirmation name and a variation of his father's mother's name - geneviève (pronounced the french way, jhon-vee-ev). then he wanted alexandria for a middle name and I said no, her name would be long enough without it. so we ended up with rose, and I think it's absolutely lovely.

for the longest time we only called her geneviève - we wanted her to know her name and be able to spell it for school - but a few years ago we started calling her gigi. she also likes g.rose and just plain g. lol

My great-grandmother wrote down as much of our family history that she could remember. Names, dates of birth of each sibling, where & when my grandparents & great-grandparents were married, even my great-great grandparents. I have recently discovered this book, and am picking out names for my twin boys. I feel that it's more important to give a child a good, strong name that shows heritage and respect for the generations before you.

Alexander, Christopher, Theodore, Elizabeth Violet (EV), Kontessa, Chandler.

However, my 13 yr old really wants me to name the twins Freddy & Jason. Yeah...I don't think so.

My older son is Jacob Brent...Jacob because my husband and I both love biblical names, even though Jacob was a bad guy (sort of) in the bible. He's 28 months now, and I think he's starting to live up to his namesake! lol And Brent becuase it's my maiden name. My dad has two daughters...me and my sister, so as for his part of the family, the Brents are dying out. I know this won't carry on my family name, but I do like the name. :)

My younger son is Aidan Morris. Aidan because St. Aidan was a wonderful man, and Morris because it's my Mother in law's maiden name. Her brother and mom died in a house fire when she was 6 years old, so the Morris's are sort of dying out, too. I REALLY didn't like the name (because of 9 Lives and Morris the cat) but you know...I've never seen such joy on a person's face when I told her we'd decided on the name after all. We sort of flip-flopped around about it, and didn't actually tell anyone until after he was born. When she came to visit us at the hospital, I introduced her to Aidan Morris. She actually cried.

My wife and I bought one of those baby name books. She picked out her favorite 10 or 20 (w/o me seeing) and I picked out my favorite 10 or 20. Then we compared notes and eliminated all the ones that didnt match. Only a couple were left and we used those for the first and middle names of our child. We did the same for kid # 2.

Seems like a good way for comprimise :)

I don't have children yet, I'm only 14, but I already found that I like names that are not necessarily unusual, but are spelled unusually. For example, I like Emmaleigh and Alegzandreea for a girl and Alegzandr or Acetin for a boy. Go with names that sound nice together. I really like Emmaleigh Gabriaylla.

My husband and I could not agree on a name. He absolutely loves Annabelle and all I could think was "Annabelle is the name of a milk cow!" He also really likes Gillian, and he didn't like any of the names I liked, like Amelia or Catherine. He liked Catherine as a middle name, but not a first name. So, I took Annabelle Catherine and Gillian Rose, wrote them down on pieces of paper, folded them up, tossed them into one of his hats, and drew one out. The winning name, Gillian Rose. Thank goodness! I'd had to draw again if Annabelle had come out of that hat! ;-)

Her name will be Olivia Gracie, I chose Olivia because I like how it sounded but chose Gracie because Hoyce Gracie is my favorite UFC fighter. Kind of weird but I am stuck on the name.
