Three men share hotel room. Clerk charges $30. Each man gives $10 bill.?

The manager tells the clerk he overcharged by $5. Gives the clerk 5 one dollar bills to return to the men. On the elevator up the clerk pockets $2, and gives each man back a $1 bill. If each man put out a $10 bill and got a $1 bill back they paid $9. Three times $9 is $27, plus the two in the clerks pocket equals $29. What happened to the other dollar?

The three men paid $30, and the clerk gave the bell hop $5 to give back which means they paid 25 for the room. He gave each man $1 and kept 2 for himself.

they each paid nine dollars for the room and got a dollar back from the bell hop

9 x 3= 27 paid for the room
3 x 1= 3 refunded
27+3= 30
