The intercostals are the group of muscles that let you expand and retract your chest while breathing. If by retraction your describing the movement, then it's when you pull your chest inward to exhale. If you're describing a medical procedure, it's probably when they have to pull the muscles aside to work on the organs beneath them.

Intercostal retractions are the inward movement of the muscles between the ribs as a result of reduced pressure in the chest cavity; usually a sign of difficulty with breathing.

the intercostals are the area between your ribs
retraction is going inwards
so look for the areas between the ribs to move inwards
there are also substernal and supraclavicular retractions (below the sternum/breast bone and above the clavicals/ shoulder bone)
All retractions mean that the person is using extra muscles in an attempt to breathe, which means breathing is harder for them then it should be. Someone who is having these and it is something new need medical help ASAP. If this is the normal for that person they need to be monitored closely by a doctor
