I check them between hard (too soon) and mushy (too late). While still firm but with a little bit of give when pressing somewhere around the middle.

An avocado is ripe when it is a bit soft when you gently squeeze it. If the outside is a bright green, it is probably not ripe. Really ripe avocados have dark green skin, sometimes even red.

Push into it with your finger and if it is soft it is ripe. Enjoy!

It should yield slightly when you press it but still feel mostly firm. If it feels hard it isn't ready.

it should be a little more brown than green, and a little sotf, spreadable soft, but not mushy soft.
