It's primadonna, and it's from italian. donna means woman and primo means first think about it..

I believe that the saying is actually Prima Donna and has nothing whatsoever to do with Madonna (although she may be considered one by some people) as it was created before she was even born.

The word tends to lend itself to people who are a bit conceited or emotional in an acting or theatre format. Typically this is attached to women, or the effeminate, although I've heard it used for others as well.

I believe that it was used a lot for the Opera Diva's when the character was rather pushy about being in the limelight and thought that they were better than everyone else.

If you've seen the Phantom of the Opera, the main singer (not Christine, but the one she is replacing) would be considered a Prima Donna.

Hope that this helps.

Prima Donna is Italian for "first lady", and was first refered to Opera singers. They were "first ladies of the stage", and could tend to have egos of huge stature. The term then went on to mean a female performer who was difficult to work with. Now, a prima donna can be used to describe any woman who considers herself superior to those around her. Another word of similar meaning is the shorter "Diva" (also an opera term), or "bi*ch".

I'm not sure if you phrased it wrong or... something, lol=P
If you meant, "PRE- Madonna", it basically means anything that came before hence the term, "pre".
However, if you're referring to the term, "primadonna", it means someone whose a diva or drama queen. Someone who has high demands & is very difficult to manage. It could also refer to the lead or the star of an opera/ musical production.

The expression is "prima donna", italian for "first lady", it means thinking or acting like you're the cream of the crop when you're only of average talent.
