Credit hours are loosely based on the number of hours in class. However, these are instructional hours. So, they can be only 45 to 55 minutes depending on how the institution defines instructional hours. For example, a college may require 48 instructional hours over a 16-week semester to award 3 credit hours (48/16=3). However, the actual number of hours in class may be closer to 45 because the instructional hour is only 50 minutes long.

Clock hours are real hours--60 minutes. Some programs cannot use instructional hours because their accrediting or licensing agency requires actual clock hours. In this case, the actual number of clock hours, based on a 60-minute clock, are logged.

SOme courses (typically vocational in nature) award credit for clock hours...the amount of time you are in class. Credit hours are computed baseD on the 50 minute hour. A TYPICAL 3 CR NO LAB COURSE MEETS FOR 2 AND 1/2 HOURS PER WEEK FOR 15 OR 16 WEEKS (A SEMESTER.) Appx 40 hours.

At my school, a 3 credit hour was either taken 3 days a week at 50 minutes each or 2 days a week for 75 minutes each. It's close, but not quite equal to clock hours.
