Your best bet is to start at a local community college. I'm enrolled in a digital photography class in Riverside, CA and am learning lots of really great material. Not only about working the camera itself, but about post processing using Photoshop CS. There are other private schools out there such as the Design Institute of Florida or the Brooks Institute of Photography up in Ventura, but you'll be looking at well over $70,000 for just your tuition. I already hold a bachelors degree from USC so another 4 years of my time and 70K was not an option. But the community college class is working out great. The instructor is a professional himself and provides valuable input to the class. You're not going to start off with Heidi Klum for a shooting project, but I'll bet your instructor will provide you with some challenging projects and who knows, maybe the cute student next to you will be your subject for a shot or two.

As far as a camera, I'd suggest a Canon Digital Rebel. It would make a good entry level camera and provide you with all of the functionality you'd need to start and work in the type of class I described above. Additionally, if you purchase any additional lenses and decide to upgrade to a better Canon body, you won't lose your investment. Good luck!

There are so many facets to photography ranging from fine art to commercial. What you should do in regards to your career all depends upon which aspect you are most interested in. However, to me it sounds like you are interested in portraiture/model photography i.e, a facet of commercial photography. Since you really haven't delved into all the aspects of photography and aren't sure what you are really interested in look for a junior college that offers a wide array of classes from fine art to commercial photography this way you can narrow your scope of interest. Furthermore a good college will often give you access to a wide variety of cameras and photo equiptment which will allow you to articulate what it is you need for your style of photography. Cameras and equiptment aren't cheap and sadly there really isn't one single camera that works for every single genre of photography. When you do decide to buy a camera you might want to try used as you may be switching cameras a lot when you first start off KEH.com

look, I cant help with classes, etc. But Ill tell you what, I now own my own photography business and have made THOUSANDS of dollars. You know how, TAKING PICTURES not classes. Do some reseach online, decide on what you are going to get, go to the local pawn shop or ebay.. Then take some pictures!
