That depends. If the badge is properly prepared so varnish would adhere, nothing bad should happen to the badge. There are a few "buts" though....

If the substrate that you are coating reacts with the particular varnish (i.e. polyurethane) that would be bad. Is the badge plastic or metal? What type of plastic or metal?

Also, your choice of coating could yellow with age or if its exposed to certain environmental elements. Not a big deal on brass, but you won't want a silver badge looking like its brass! Some coatings won't yellow.

Also, you won't want the coating to peel. It could collect moisture or chip off and look bad as well.

Properly done, a good top coat will protect the finish, but will still require some care. Poorly done and things will be worse than without it.

Do you mean putting a coating of Polyurethane on a badge?

Probably would not hurt.
