Less than you might imagine. Most lower standards have to do with educational levels. Some have to do with individual arrest records. The average recruit who falls in either of these categories will more than likely be slated for the infantry. Sometimes guys like this fare better, than their better educated peers.

As far advanced, from a technical standpoint, as the infantry has become, it isn't so complex that a person with average intelligence can't learn the system. That being said, I can see a real plus for the army and Marine Corps by giving these guys a chance. Hopefully, they will be pleasantly surprised.

It depends on how far the standards are lowered. Most of the recent standards reductions in the U.S. military have been relatively minor, so I expect the effects will be minor as well.

With lowered admission standards, training and retention costs will go up a little, as a larger portion of new recruits will lack the skills to get through training and stay in the military more than a few months. I suspect there will be discipline problems and potential morale problems as well, as a lot of the individuals "sliding through the cracks" of the new standards system will not be able to integrate into the military culture as well as other servicemembers.

You cater the military to the less qualified and as a result the more qualified people won't stay in. It's already happening.
