If you believe in life after death then there are beings(souls) there who would like to let their loved ones know that it is okay after you die. You do live on. I don't think you could describe it as gullible. I think most people that believe it do so because they really, really want to. I think deep down they know its not realy but they want to be able to talk to their loved ones again, so if it sounds good they'll accept it.
