Good idea. At least you want to do something realistic instead of complaining and ranting on a racist tirade about the "deserves" like some others on here. We should do more to help immigrants (All of them- from Asia, Africa, The Middle East, Europe and Latin America) assimilate into the mainstream. Good for you.

That's not what a substitute teacher does. I'm a part time substitute teacher - I do not have a teaching credential and I went through a 1 day training session. I'm basically a glorified babysitter... I don't have to grade, come up with a lesson plan -all I have to do is make sure the kids don't hurt themselves or each other (this is sometimes a full time task)
If I were to teach English to immigrants I would no longer be a substitute teacher... I'd be an English ESL teacher which requires more training and a credential. With that kind of job I would EXPECT to be paid just as much as a regular full time teacher... in fact, I would be a full time teacher.
Your idea doesn't hold water... if you want to have a volunteer ESL program that might work but keep in mind that teaching English to non-speakers isn't a walk in the park... its hard work. There's no easy cheap way of teaching.

When people came to this country years ago, I don't think the taxpayer paid to have them learn the English language. Why don't some people just volunteer their time at a church or something like that to teach English. Why should the taxpayer have to pay for special this and special that? The school district that I work for pay special teachers for teaching English, they pay special secretaries who speak Spanish for pupil personnel to communicate with the parents. Some of these immigrants have been in this district for years but have no desire to learn the language. They even suggested ( not demanded) that school bus drivers take a course in Spanish so they can communicate with the parents and children because they speak no English. The bus drivers declined the suggestion because they feel this is America and the immigrants should be the ones learning to speak English not vice-versa. They even have someone on the payroll who personally calls the homes if school is closed due to bad weather ..where the rest of the people have to listen to the radio to see if their school is closed. But since they speak no English, they get special treatment. So as for any more additional training for anyone at the taxpayers expense, I say no. Why not try to initiate a volunteer program for the ones that feel we should do more than we already are.

I'm not against learning Spanish in schools, it opens the door for jobs like Border Patrol, I.C.E., Homeland defense and on and on and on. It's not a bad thing to be bilingual, but is a very bad thing to speak only Spanish in an English speaking nation. I'm sick of hearing Spanish commercials in Wal Mart stores, seeing the English Spanish labels, signs, the press two for Spanish crap! Am I still living in the united states? Was there some sort of twilight zone show I'm going to be starring in? Teach all the English you want because I want these illegal and their children to understand when we tell them to get on the bus!

Sorry, but I pay for those teachers wages. So, absolutely not. There are plenty of classes offered all over the place for ESL. Teaching illegals English should not be a taxpayer burden.

As a teacher, I say absolutely not! While in theory it is a nice idea, there are all kinds of funding problems that will go along with this program (class space, supplies, food, time, etc.). Additionally, this type of program sets up the potential for teahers' unions to be undermined which will cause all sort of labor problems.

Why should we spend more money on teachers to teach immigrants ( and illegal) how to speak English? If they want to be in this country they need to learn it before they come here. If we went to their country they would expect us to know their language. I pay enough taxes for us to hire more teachers for unnecessary jobs.
