If he/she does it when you are holding then then calmly put them down, gown down to there level, put your hand over their mouth for 3 seconds (not hard as to hurt them) and firmly say "we DO NOT bite people" The biggest thing is removing them from the situation, after they bite they need to be moved to another location/room and explained to that its not ok to bite people. Even if you dont think they understand your words they understand the action and the consequence

My mother just bit me back. I did this with my daughter too. But after watching Super Nanny, I just put my grandson in the corner and set the timer for 3 minutes (one minute for each year of age) When the timer goes off, I go to him, get down to his level and make him look at me. I say ' Grandma doesn't think you're a nice boy when you bite' Biting is not nice. Will you try to not bite again? It will make grandma SO proud of you! I love you. You're a good boy. We don't seem to have a problem when we use this system. Instead of Biting you can insert Hitting, Spitting on and on.

Sorry, I do not have too much time to give you suggestions.

...Just keep in mind that your child must learn that ACTIONS YIELD CONSEQUENCES. Both reward desired behavior, and punish undesirable behavior. That means using positive and negative reinforcments in a calculated manner. You must be consistent! Do not make threats or promises without sticking to your word. Set clear rules, and be sure to inform your child of the results he/she can expect for keeping to or breaking the rules. This is key for effective child-rearing, in general.

For example, the next time your child has an episode of biting, bring him/her to his/her crib or bedroom, and let your child stay there for a period of time. You might choose a set amount of time for the punishment. You may require your child to admit to breaking a rule and allow him/her to leave the room upon apologizing for the disobedient behavior. Be cautious in response to crying or other tantrums; discontinue the punishment only if there is a safety issue with your child. Punishments can be created to fit each individual child, and should be adjusted to be most effective. But they must be used with consistency. It is beneficial to condition children so that, as they mature and grow, they will be healthy, productive, and independent members of society.

Stop spanking and yelling at him. It is, WITHOUT QUESTION a violence thing. Mothers who yell and scream a lot or spank their kids prior to age 5 will have children that bite, hit, and throw violent temper tantrums.

Bite them back, not hard, don't draw blood.
My mom did it to me and then I bit myself. Pretty sure I stopped after that.
