so we wouldn't feel so alone.

Man didn't create God. God created man. Everything God created is beautiful and everything man tries to create crumbles to the ground.

This certainly would be a great insight into how the human mind reasons, but I cannot wrap my puny little brain around it.
More than anything, I suppose the fact that our brains can transcend the reality that we can perceive with our senses we can realize a infinity that is terrifying without some sort of companion that will always be there (great run-on sentence). We're afraid to die. . .
Does such a consciousness exist anywhere else on the planet? I guess that's why there's no great divine earthworm, or other such deities.

Assuming, of course, that man did create God, there are several reasons. First, because there's death. People fear death and they mourn their loved ones who die. It's a lot easier to deal with it all if you believe in God and an afterlife. Second, because there are many things they can't explain. It's the universal answer for ananswerable questions. Third, because it gives people power. 'God says so' carries a lot more weight than 'I say so.'

to explained the unexplained. such as thunder and lightning, earthquake. these are no phenomenas that can be easily explained or understood. the leaders of the people had to devise some kind of idea to keep the people from freaking out. the solution? The Supernatural or namely God. this provided to the people the explaination of events that are "miracles" and even impossible to happen. it eventually evolved into religion.
BTW i am not an atheist. but just because it was an idea does not mean it is not true. God may as well exist as you and i exist

Because God created man with an innate knowledge of and longing for God, probably one of the surest proofs of God's existence.

Simply put, man created god to explain the universe and mankind's existence; to give his life purpose and meaning.
I mean, look at how devastating the alternative (reality) is.
Why live in reality when you can live in a world that explains floods, firey bushes, parting seas, hordes of locusts as miracles or the wrath of a supreme ghost up in the sky???

To help less fortunate ones try and understand the Universe on terms they can accept. To feel important about our place in the Universe.
The "others" use science and logic to understand the real nature of the Universe. To begin to know our true place in the Cosmos.
A belief in God places limits on a Universe that is infinite and has no limit.
