It was interpreted as the number that was used for the devil, but recently it was discovered that it was misinterpreted. It is actually supposed to be 616. Also, with it being 666, they used it to say that 3 am is the witching hour (when it is more common for demons to lurk, and is hence 3 sixes) as opposed to 3 pm which is the time Christ was world widely accepted to have died.

Rev 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
here's another weird "fact" i've picked up... each letter of the Ancient Hebrew and Greek alphabets correspond to numbers, and for both, the equivalent of the English letter W corresponds to the number 6. If you take a look at the second Bible quote, it says no business will flourish without the mark of the beast, i.e. 666, or www. we're all going to burn....
luckily though, i am not a christian so do not believe in all that...

In Revelation 13:18 of Christian Bible, "666" is the number of the beast, the number of a man. The beast is the creature that rises up to oppose God and wage war against him. (It is not the number of the "antichrist" as some people erroneously think.)

It is a fundamentalist Christian belief that the name of the anti Christ is supposed to be the birth mark so he can be identified.
I say John the Revelator was way way too high to be writing stuff down. Of the whole book of impossibilities the 666 thing is what they cling to, and ignore the image of Jesus, peaceful lamb of god, wearing a robe drenched in blood.
It's a pretty good sci-fi story though, dragons come down from heaven, cities ascend to heaven, multi headed beasts appear, it's pretty good. But a prophecy, nah.

it says it in Revelations. In the hebrew tounge, all the letters have numerical meanings, so, the anti-christ's, or the dragon with the seven heads, and so on, can be (and was by saint john) "decoded" as the number 666.
hope that helps, you can read revelations, for more help

Actually, it is the numerical value of the Hebrew letters in the Roman Emperor's name. He was a tad hostile to the early Jews/Christians.

It's supposed to be the mark of the beast (Satan). More recent biblical interpretations say it is 616. For a very complete dissertation go to www.wikipedia.com: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/666_(number)
