i just happen to have a 7 year old beagle with ear problems, as well.... i think it's pretty common. our vet gave us an ointment to use every other day, in addition to a cleanser. soak 2 cotton balls w/cleanser, 1 lightly and 1 liberally. toss the really soaked one into the ear canal- QUICKLY!! and drop that floppy ear. massage for 2 min.-they love it! then remove, then do the same with the lightly soaked cotton ball. once more with a dry one. use the larger type cotton balls, as our beagles have a lot of ear to clean!!

The vet needs to make sure the ears aren't infected, because if the eardrum is ruptured, you could do permanent damage. If the ears are healthy but just a little dirty, then you pour dog ear cleaner in them , massage the bottom, let him shake his head, then wipe out the dirt & cleaner with cotton balls. Q-tips can pack stuff further down and actually damage the ear canal. Only use them in the top area, the "nooks and crannies" and don't put it down in the ear any farther than you can see the tip.

Here are the simple steps:
1. Use an ear wash formulated for ear cleaning.
2. Soak a cotton ball thoroughly in the ear wash. Squeeze out excess ear wash.
3. Place the cotton ball in your dog's ear and gently rub up and down.
4. Allow your dog to shake off excess moisture. This is important for preventing ear infections.
5. Soak the tip of a cotton swab in the ear wash and run it along the nooks and crannies of your dog's ears.
6. Avoid putting the swab down your dog's ear canal; leave this type of cleaning to the veterinary medical staff.

You can buy ear cleaning wipes..I've found these are easiest. You can also buy an ear and skin cleaner for dogs and use paper towels ( q-tips for the hard to reach areas but not IN the ear canal!)Just squirt it in and massage the ear to loosen the "gunk" then wipe clean!
