Yes I have complained. I didn't complain to get free coupons. But when I buy a product and something is wrong I let the company know. One time I opened a package of baby wipes that was filled with black stuff. I sent the package back and they sent me a case of baby wipes! It was much needed since I had twin infants at the time!

Several -
Coca-cola: Cans were overfilled and the pop was flat for some reason. They asked me to send the case back and I did. They sent me a coupon for $50.00
Molson Canadian Beer: Found a "foreign object" inside my beer bottle (something that wasn't fully removed in the cleaning process). They asked me to send the case (there were only 2 beers left .. HAHA .. ) and I did. They sent me a coupon for a 24 pack case of beer.
McCain French Fries: Found a SCORPION in my french fries!!! They were the precooked kind. I took all kinds of photos and documented everything. The insect was fully breaded like the fries (proving that I couldn't have added it afterwards). I sent letter after letter and phoned many times with no response. They never did anything, and I've never ever purchased another McCain product since.

Yes, both. Though I don't do it to get the coupons - I do it because either was was really impressed with their product or service and wanted to say so, or because I was really unhappy with it, and wanted to say so ;-)
If it was something I was happy about, the coupons are a bonus, as I'm generally going to use them again. If it's something I was complaining about, I usually throw them away, or give them to someone else, after explaining to them how I got them and why I don't want them (so they don't think I'm suggesting the company or product).

Yes, I have complimented a restaurant (using their online form) and gotten coupons for discounts at my next visit. I have also complained about a product over the phone (Pampers Cruisers) and gotten a reimbursement check and coupon.

Oh, YES!!! Quite a few times. If the product doesnt do what it is supposed to and you can find your way to the corporate office, they are more than happy to give you free items to keep you as a customer. You just have to put the time and effort into researching where the best person would be to get you these items.

I called and emailed and they sent me 5 cards for 5 free meals each! it pays to complain and if they don't know there is a problem, they cant fix it!!

Yes, but I don't think anyone should complain/compliment just for that purpose. Secondary gain should not be an issue, I only voice an opinion when an opinion is due.
