Well he could do both, let her know he isnt crazy about the movie and doesnt really want to watch it...but for her, he is willing to sit through it...especially being a NEW girlfriend, she will be impressed and think he is so sweet...and he could even make a little deal out of it..like..."If I sit with you through this movie, then you have to sit through a movie I want to see"....tell your son good luck...

He should be honest with her and tell her he has no interest in seeing Rent. But, he should also tell her that if she really wants to see it he will go with her, then next time he picks the movie. There has to be compromise in all relationships, even for things as small as movies.

No! What kind of selfish person is your son dating? Some movies are chick-flicks and no man should be forced to sit through them. They should find a movie that they both want to see. She can see Rent-or any other chick-flick--when she goes out with her girl friends.

It depends. Does he think the girl is worth it? Is he willing to do something for her to give her a little happiness, even though he doesn't really want to? He could always tell her that it's not something he wants to see, but will go and see it with her if she really wants to. Maybe she will at least compromise with him and see a movie the both will enjoy. I do this with my boyfriend and he realizes that i miss some of the movies that i would like to see and every once in a while, he will take me to see one just because he knows i want to, even if he doesn't. And I know he doesn't, but it shows that he doesn't just think about himself and cares about my happiness.

I have a girlfriend and well, I have sat through a few movies that I didn't want to watch. I just think of it this way, its just a movie, it is just around a couple hours and well next time, you should pick out the movie. I say go see it, have fun, and pick it out next time.

Being a parent, you should know this one... sometimes you have to "bite the bullet" so to speak. If he wants future dates with this girl, he might want to grin and bear it. At the same time, he should make it clear that the NEXT movie they see will be some wannabe-Godfather sequel. If she's unwilling to acknowledge that compromises will need to exist in the relationship, then he doesn't want to waste his time sitting through hell and should skip out on date #1.

Hehehe, welcome to relationships. Sometimes you have to give a little to maintain the comfort level. Give and take are important parts of having a loving balanced relationship.
In this case, it's one movie, and if it makes her happy, then it's a point in the win column.
How many times has she sat through a movie that he wanted to watch, but she was not really interested in? I'll bet it's a few movies.
Give her a break, have some fun and share the moment. You really have nothing to lose.

Well its going to work both ways one day he will have to see the movie that she wants and she will have to see the movie the he wants but he should maybe mention that that kind of movie is not his type and if she cares about him she may not pick that kind of movie for a while.

I think it would be important to find out if the girlfriend likes the movie or not. If she does, then the respectful thing to do would be to watch it with her, then discuss it later over coffee and a pastry. If she does not like it, then it would be ok to bail, but still go to the coffee shop for java and pastry.
The name of the movie is irrelevant to the question.
