Should we spend the extra money and just get hardwood, or is pergo a good choice? We're having our 1st home built and need to save money, but want a few nice upgrades. Are either of these options worth it or should we just stick to tile and carpet??

I would go for the hardwood floors, I had the laminate floors put down in my house and it looks real nice and it is pretty tough too but it is also Loud, especially if you drop something on it.
I personally would not have carpet, especially if you or anyone in your family have allergies. Spend the extra money for the hardwood, it will have a lot better re-sale value if you decide to move up to a bigger home.

Pergo makes about 4 different grades of flooring. Actually I just had pre-finished flooring made by Shaw put in. I totally disagree with the person that said put in carpet. Why pay for carpet then have to remove it and have hardwood installed???
The pre-finished (laminate) flooring IS noiser but it is much tougher. Conventional hardwood will scratch easily and furniture will leave impressions in the varnish.. but it IS pretty and can be refinished several times.
One thing I like about the pre-finished is NO dust from sanding but that is not a problem with new construction

if i was you i would get carpet through out the whole house and after you close have your tile and hardwood not pergo(this stuff is made for trailer houses) installed by a local flooring company.
this will save you anywhere from 60 to 70% and you have a longer warranty with a reputable flooring company. I have been in the flooring business for 11 yrs. and if your in the Dallas area i would be more than happy to give you a bid. afracer85@yahoo

This is my feeling on hardwood vs. laminate(Pergo):

Hardwood may scratch/dent easier, but it actually looks fine with these imperfections - like if you see a 40 year old hardwood floor in an old house, it is all beat up but still looks nice.

Pergo, if you drop something heavy and sharp on it, tends to shatter and split more than wood. It then looks like crap and HAS to be fixed, which can be difficult and may never look right. This comes from experience - I dropped the cover off our hydro panel on our new pergo floor, UGH!

I would get 3/4inch hardwood, might be a little more but its a much better product. And 3/4 can be sanded and finished later a few times when the finish wears over the years. Pergo you cant sand, you have to just rip it out . Flooring installer Michigan.

Cut down the square footage and get real hardwood. There's just nothing like it.
