I have to agree with the jealousy camp.

Actually, after having read some of the other wonderful answers, I have to say it's because America is run behind the scenes by the Aliens from Omega 7 who are sucking the brains out of the other countries people, and are in collusion with the KKK, The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the Taco Bell Dog. Their main purpose on earth is to prove that KY Jelly is answer to the meaning of life.

They particularly like the taste of Mexican brain, that's why they're always calling for free immigration; perhaps you've heard a few of them on the board...

As an aside, this is meant as a joke for those of you who can't tell the difference.

Oh, and Jason L? Your proctologist called. They found your head.

Your country is hated because in the world at large it behaves in a very expansive and agressive way. There were times when the world was bi-polar, and then at least two countries were hated. Now in the uni-polar world, where America rules, you have no choice. Eat it. If you love your freedom so dearly that you are pushing it eagerly with bombs on other nations, do not expect them to be greatful for being killed. If you love your life style so much that the TVs of the whole world look like one big American TV with American soaps, American shows, etc. (both good and extremely stupid and bad), do not expect people to be greatful for that - instead they are getting fed up with everything American. And everything is American all over the world ("we're all living in America", as Rammstein sings) not because it's the best, but because you have the money, the atomic weapon and enough impudence to think you can dictate the world how to live. Look at the discussion you are leading. I understand all of you are probably very young, but in your free world you must have heard of pluralism and the freedom of word - it means other opinions have the right to exist. However, it looks more and more that it's not so. The only way to live, to think and be can be just American in our world.
People are coming to work and live there because of the aforementioned money that you have. It doesn't necessarily mean all of them are happy to come to the U.S.

One more thing. I know a number of Americans personally and I like most of them. This is always the case: simple people are simple people, they have lots in common whatever nationality they have. But the states they inhabit are entities with their own character. The problem is, that the more democratic the society is, the more responsible are its individual members for the policy of the state...

Nobody is Jealous of the US, Europe is 100 times better than the US, rich and powerful?? there are a lotta rich and powerful countries besides the US. USA have so many haters, because they are selfish and stuck up in themselves, everywhere they go they think they're god because they're americans and that people have to serve them because of that, pleaseeeeeeeee, if you are a country like the us you should exercise leadership and help the other countries and not think about us us us, thats why it have so many haters. But I know of 2 countries that if they unite they will bust americans asses, I wont say though cause then the CIA would be on me ;)

And stop saying that Americans won WWII, if it wasnt for englands, frenchs and russians, Hitller would had crashed the US army

America is mostly a country of the unbelievably stupid, naive and ignorant.

However, it has become rich and powerful because of a land rich in natural resources (taken with much bloodshed from the natives) and because of a small minority of brilliant scientists and intellectuals who are held in contempt by the majority who take advantage of their achievements.

America has been so provably wrong on so many issues it is absurd and they are too stupid to see it.

1. They now talk about solving the problems of the Middle East after voting in a president who initially said the rest of the world didn't matter to Americans (and wanted to pull out of the Palestinian/Israeli peace process- the Palestinian situation being a prime recruiting sergeant for terrorists)

2. They ignored the rest of the world who warned that they should take stock and plan before invading Iraq (and many of these supported eventual military action.

3. They said they don't believe in Global Warming (the fact that they would ignore their own Academy of Science shows how anti-intellectual they are).

Of course many want to become American-its like the kid at school who toadies to the school bully hoping for protection

I don't think everyone hates this country. However, there is a growing resentment with our policies, particularly our using the efforts to vanquish terror as an excuse to justify the exportation of our own brand of injustice.

I think the level of animosity towards our country is directly proportional to our economic and military prowess, and our usage of those assets that are either self-serving or misappropriated. There is in essence a dichotomy between our words and our actions.

Take for example our current situation in Iraq. We state that the impetus behind our invasion, and our protracted occupation, was to eliminate any threat of WMDs, and now - after the fact - to ensure that Iraq citizens are free from despots and militants.

However, if our intentions were so pure and egalitarian, you would think that we would commit the same number of troops to places like Darfur where tyranny, rampant violence, and heart-rending genocide are of such a degree that it even eclipses Iraq as a humanitarian crisis. Yet our assistance in both economic aid and military protection for Darfur are not even a fraction of what we put forth in Iraq. Why? Well, put simply, the world can see our primary objective is strategic and financial gain in Iraq, and since there is no economic advantage to defending Darfur, we do little to help them. We are simply mercenaries who sell our services to the highest bidder, and if an impoverished area like Darfur cannot meet our insatiable appetite for crude oil, or strategic placement of military bases, we give them the cold shoulder. The world community is aware of this opportunism more, dare I say, than the US population. So when Bush spouts off about vanquishing terrorists, and restoring freedom, he is simply insulting the global community’s intelligence. So you wonder why they hate us?

Of course every country suffers from hypocrisy, but ours is most egregious because we have the largest resources at our disposal to rid or reduce the ills in this world, so whenever we fail to act, or act in a way contrary to the way we should, our hypocrisy tends to overshadow everyone else’s. As Luke 12:48 states, "To whom much is given, much is required"

You ask the question as to why everyone wants to come to work here when they know all this. Well, put simply the people who migrate here in droves to seek better opportunity don't voice these opinions. For them material necessity or betterment is of far greater import than political opinions. The people who come to work here and the foreigners who angrily denounce America are two different groups. You are conflating them. Granted in many cases there are a few hypocrites who deride the US and then simultaneously seek to find employment here, but for the most part they are two different groups.

You will find many answers to this question. Probably most will be reasonable. What the world thinks of us is dependent on many factors, some real, some imagined. Your sub-question, I think, says it all. This nation is founded on the rule of law. Not all obey, not all enforce, but in general, it provides for a safe haven for us to conduct our lives and pursue 'life, liberty, happiness'. That really BURNS people who aren't used to that kind of life.

In France, Italy, Germany, England, Ireland, Middle East, China and elsewhere, life had been and often still is a challenging, arduous, often fruitless endeavor that consisted and sometimes still does consist of self-sustinence and self-medication. That's just not fun. The US, on the other hand, is a culture occupied with success, ambition, forward-progress, wealth accumulation, continual improvement, a culture of life- enjoyment, fulfillment, sharing of success and open pursuit of the best things in life. This seems natural to us, it's not natural to others. Others are either used to the state supporting them, used to a life sometimes overly devoted to lethargy, negative excess and leisure first and foremost, and less devoted to the fruits of labor and subsequent success; or they are on the other spectrum, still dealing with surviving each day, and look at our nation as one of exploiters, of spoiled, egotistical, arrogant have-it-all's who don't care about them.

In reality, if you live in America, you really have it made. And a true test of the preference of culture is immigration. See what countries are having problems with immigration, and that will tell you where everyone wants to live.

Americans donate more, contribute more of their time and income, and achieve more in their lifetimes than, I'd suspect, any other nationality you can think of. We're wired in a way that allows us to work hard, for the most part, and play hard. We like to have the blank canvas of life and paint different pictures and re-invent ourselves during the course of our lives. These things are either not pursued by other nationalities (European, South American) or are not accessible to other nationalities (Central American, African, Asian, Middle East, etc.).

I think Russia gets it, but they often swing the pendulum way over to the pursuit of happiness and success, at the expense of the rule of law and the sanctity of privacy and property.

I wouldn't worry about who likes us/doesn't like us. You can never please everyone, and it's a fruitless endeavor to try. Americans as a people support democracy, freedom, God, neighborly relations and the honest pursuit of personal and social success. Anyone who has problems with that, has problems period and should work them out before pointing a finger towards America.

It's like being friends with the schoolyard bully. It's not Americans or America that most of the world dislikes, it's that schoolyard bully that America is condoning as their leader.

He feels facts not from his mind and the overwhelming evidence, but he feels the facts from the gut.
Oh! So he must speak the truth, right?

People love to come here because it is a great place to live and work in spite of the problems we have.

Second, the negative view is because of our foriegn policy as executed by this administration. The US has been disliked in other aministrations too but it has gotten worse.

i think ppl's negative view of our country comes from them not trusting the government. the govt is always screwing the ppl over and starting un-needed wars. president bush hasnt helped our country much. but also, ppl just dont appreciate how much better america is than most other countries....

The negative view has to do with jealousy. They hate that we're rich and powerful. It has nothing to do with who we really are.

Not only do they all want to come here, but who is the first person they call when they need money, food, medicine, or protection?
