I've been the south and central america, my wife hasn't travelled anywhere. I want to see the world and show it to my family, but I don't want to nor can afford to spend alot of money, besides I'd rather stay in hostals. South America is my first choice...input?

As with all things I'm sure it depends on where you are and what you pay. Having said that I am currently living in Quito, Ecuador and have been doing some travel around Ecuador with my wife and 4 month old. We only stay in hostel's when we travel and our experience has been excellent.

We pick places that are reasonably priced (5 per nignt per person is the norm) with a private bath room and in a safe area.

Keep in mind our daughter is so young that she can't get in to much by herself (i.e. power sockets). But as far as saftey is concerned, with a little care we have had absolutly no problems. In fact many of the familiy owned places offer extra assistance because of the baby.

My only concern would be that no hostal is going to be baby proofed. But you shouldn't be spending much time in the hostal. Not much to do in there but sleep

Another concern you might concider is bathing the children. My daughter likes to drink the bath water which is not a problem in the U.S. but here she could get ill. So we need to boil the water we bath her in and let it cool before she gets a bath.

Let me say though that I have had one bad hostel experience on Little Corn Island in Nicaraugua. My wife and I were traveling witout a baby and we found the hostels to be a little pricy by Nicaraguan standards (6-8per nignt) so we walked around the island a bit and found a place for 4per night in a shadey area on the island.

At three A.M. some kids began yelling in our window "Ronald, Ronald" (their deragatory slangs for Americans). They shined a flash light in the window, and then we overheard them say amonst themselves that they should break in and "drag the f***ers" out.

This was a scary experience and could/should have been avoided. We comprimised our common sense to save a few buck and it wasn't worth it.

My advice, it is safe to travel with baby and to stay at a hostels if you are careful and use a little common sense. But if your gut is telling you something is off, even just a little off find somewhere that's doesn't give you that vibe. Even if it means paying a few extra bucks.

P.S. Nicaragua was fun traveling, we had one bad experience in 8 weeks of travel and that was because we made a stupid mistake.
Good Luck

I would suggest that you rent entire rooms as you are planning to stay in hostels. Most hostels have rooms with 2 bunk beds. I myself have decided sometimes to go ahead and rent the entire room, where I get my own key, just for privacy and when I am not in the mood to be around other people.

It is pretty safe as long as you do that. Take into consideration that most folks to stay in hostels won't enjoy children around, specially at night. Good Luck.

maybe safe, not comfortable though, and in most hostels, children are not allowed. And if you're going to south america, isn't everything cheap enough by EU/USA standards ?
if you're really serious, just take a nice comfy holiday, leave the 'see the world' for when your kids are older, and you have enough money ...

No. Hostels can be very dangerous, I would never bring any child under the age of 16 to a hostel to stay.

You'll be safe if you stay on the highway as long as possible. You should be ok stopping for Gas/Food/Bathroom (for food I reccommend the drive-thru) but only stop in larger and newer shopping centers.

Have you ever seen the movie Hostel?? Just kidding, it might be okay, but kind of dangerous, so I wouldn't do it, I would wait...
