We are looking at buying a house, but would need to alter the staircase. Currently, it is straight with a steep pitch, so we would want to make it half straight, then the other half a landing perpendicular.

I didn't copy your question, lady, calm down. You want to extend something, I just want to half of it. It's a much different project. Chill.

A very difficult question to answer.The cost can vary greatly depending on many circumstances.The actual cost of the new staircase will cost anything up to £1000.Removal of the existing one and labour costs in fitting the new one could cost you at least the same amount or even more.Get a reputable builder to give you an estimate,it shouldn`t cost you anything for an estimate. That's a good question, we have a staircase thats wicked steep, I am afraid of the darn thing. I would call around and check out prices for someone to come in and have it remodeled to your liking ,Make sure you do get reliable people who know what they are doing and offer a good price .You want to be happy all around with a nice staircase and not to costly.So many other things seem to pop up when you own your home and sometimes happen unexpectly.

How long is a piece of string? If you want the staircase changed, by someone else it will likely cost you hundreds, thousands possibly, Depends on the size, the nature of the new structure, the type of material you use ie mdf, oak, mahogany, pine. But!!....if you're competent and equipped to do it yourself it'll just cost the price of materials. I built two staircases in my cottage, turns (winders) top and bottom on each, height approx. 6' 9" each. (nine treads) in pine about £100. Sounds ok but costs increase if you have to buy a biscuit jointer to join boards for winders, and a router to round the front edges of treads.

Honey....Where is the check book kind of money. Ripping apart trim, drywall, re-framing. There are several different trades involved here. I would consult with a general contractor.
As a side note, I've seen staircases in new homes that cost in excess of $250,000.00 . Yep a cool quarter million. Pretty extravagant, but gorgeous. Makes a good first impression when you walk into home.
