RE:
Why is a diamond the symbol for carpool/HOV lanes?

Because a diamond lasts forever. So does the wait to leave an HOV lane.

just guessing here as a 25 yr truck driver, but many times the HOV lanes are used to go toward town in the morning, and then the same lanes are reversed so they are used to travel away from town, so no matter what direction of travel you are taking the symbols would look the same, and in theory the diamonds just represent opposite directions with back to back arrows

i think Michael has it. The symbol marking both arrows back to back signifying a bidirectional lane as opposed to a one way lane. I have also noticed that they use the lanes going one way in the morning and another way in the evening.
Good "guess" Michael
the only other thing that screws me up is that there are two other directions on the diamond. Left and right, and they realy don't help you in going to far. Are they to encourage you to only drive a realy short distance and then stop, thus helping the environment even more?

The diamond symbol is used for a variety of lanes, not just HOV lanes on highways.

According to the wiki;-------------------------
A diamond lane is a special lane on a on a street or highway that is reserved for specific types of traffic. These lanes are usually marked with white diamonds, hence their name. Diamond lanes are generally the right-most or left-most lane on the road. They are usually implemented to provide ways through traffic congestion, for safety reasons, and to encourage environmentally friendly transportation. A diamond lane may be intended for a specific type of traffic, or for several types. The intended use of a diamond lane is marked by traffic signs. In most areas, violating the rules of a diamond lane is punishable by fine.

Some common examples are:

High-occupancy vehicle lane, also known as a carpool lane. These are typically freeway lanes indented for multiple occupant or "green vehicles" (such as hybrid or electric cars).

Bike lane, sometimes referred to as segregated cycle facilities. Separating bicylce traffic from pedestrian or motor vehicle traffic is typically safer and improves traffic flow.

Bus Lane, an uncongested lane for busses to travel, load, or unload in.

Emergency vehicle lane, to help emergency vehicles get to their destination as fast as possible while avoiding traffic congestion.

Taxicab lanes, most often found at airports or other transit hubs for passenger loading and unloading.

It's a symbol that certainly gets your attention and indicates you simply cannot just 'ride' freely in the lane duing specific hours although I must admit - SOME of the drivers don't seem to have respect for the lane and will drive in it -anyway - with one person in the vehicle. ON a funny note - one man was recently stopped and ticketed for having a 'blowup doll' in the passenger seat!

Smoovegeek,

It means it' a restricted lane.

Real Diamonds are hard to afford,
restricted to most.

so perhaps
we should have a
cubic zirconium lane
for those who can't
afford the real thing,

Now, what symbol do we use,
and who do we let use that lane?
Any suggestions?
