The big benevolent ball of hydrogen and helium can be seen and it's effects can be observed. It sustains life on earth.

Seems like it would make a great deal of sense to Atheists.

Many ancient civilizations did worship the sun such as the aboriginal peoples of North & South America, the Egyptians and some Romans.

That was when people believed that natural objects were supernatural beings with power and personality. For example, by using the word, benevolent, you are humanizing and giving godlike powers to a natural object.

Your points are well-taken, but today, we know that praying to a natural object that doesn't think or reason is a meaningless exercise. You see, we have learned a lot since ancient times.

You do make a good point, though. We wouldn't last very long if the sun left its space.

Yes, atheists will believe if you present valid proof, but I doubt they would worship a natural objest.

Actually, sun worship has been widespread for many centuries, and christianity, being the mosaic of beliefs it is, has even stolen plenty of the sun worshipping rituals, symbolisms and background, that you could argue that christianity is a sun worshipping religion, specially in christianity, mormonism and between freemasons

starting, as pointed before, by sunday as the holliest of days, continuing with the symbolism of the oysters and the sacred communion, and continuing with the design of the cathedrals around the world

I think that the answer to this question answers many others have about such things:
What does the sun claim? What philosophy is preached by the sun? What are the promises proclaimed by the sun, and what has been fulfilled by those promises?

Since there is no claim that can be veiwed rationally by the sun, there is not a need to worship it in these modern days.

The sun is awesome, and without saying any words, the sun speaks about God's glory. Everything in the sky shouts "There is a God" without saying a word. This reminds me of one of my favorite scriptures Psalms 19 here's part of it. The heavens declare the glory of God;the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavillon, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.

Don Rocks!
many do worship the sun.
a lot of important religious symbols can be traced back to the sun... the lion, for example: i think it's associated with the sun because of it's location in the zodiac. it's also a symbol of one of the four gospel writers and often a symbol for christianity during the crusades (and in narnia!). lions also carry the bed of the dying buddha, and a lion's roar is what he heard upon enlightenment. there are other sun symbols all around us. you can find out more in books by joseph campbell.

its not possible to look at the sun for extended periods of time, and although without it, life as we no it would not be possible. i see more sense in people worshipping the moon is more effective, and has been proven that it has enormous effects, not only on the tides, but in fertility, moods, and even has effects on animals...

Many did and still do it.
But.. the sun is a created thing just like the earth. It was created by God.
And hey! Jesus is not the Lord. Jesus is the son of God. God is the Lord and Yaveh is his name.

You freakin fundamentalist evangelist people should stop mixing things up. *****!!
