Yea, just get them a little one so they can bring papers and assignments from the teacher home. When I was in elementary school, parents bought materials and they were collectively used by the class, rather than individuals having their own.

Usually in Kindergarten, they ask the parents to supply their child with a backpack so they can carry their needed supplies and homework ( if they assign it), if you still aren't sure, contact the teacher to personally ask about the backpacks or check to see if they have a supply list out or posted on the Internet for kindergartners. Even if they do not require it, having a bookbag would be good to give them because, hey, when you first went to kindergarten, didn't you want to be just like the big kids and carry one too?

Yes

Make sure you get one that is their size and a back pack with two straps. You might be amazed how much these little guys will bring home and you don't want to hurt their backs. Also, no rolling backpacks...they are 2-3 times heavier and could injure the child.

No they usually dont. The school ofter provides a "cubby" for them to put things in and the parent of pick up person checks this cubby. Because preschools dont typically have homework ther is not much need for a backpack. And little people have trouble keeping up with them.

I remember I had a backpack in kindergarten.....one of those ones that had some kind of character on it, meant more to look cute rather than actually carry a lot of items.

As former preschool teacher, please let me put a plug in for a spare change of clothes tucked in to a backpack. Your child may never need a change of clothes but even if they need it just once that spare set of clothes is a lifesaver.
Children even in kindergarten may have a school supply list to bring in to school - you may need to call the school or look at your local discount stores for school supply lists. Our local Wal-Wart always has the local schools supply lists available.
Plus kindergarteners like to be like the big kids who carry back packs so it helps them to feel like one of the big kids even if literally nothing but a spare set of clothes may be in it.

Depends if the teacher gives out homework. To be on the safe side, buy one but don't take off the tags. If your child needs it use it. If (s)he doesn't take it back to the store...

Depends on your kid, if he is a pack -rat .then he'll want to carry his own crayons and stuff by himself.
In essence they can but it is not absolutely necessary, if they do remember to pack spare clothes in case there is an accident
