and what can I do to treat and prevent it? It only happens on his tail and just in the past month.

He may have Stud Tail. It is caused when a male cat sprays things too much. The spray sticks to his tail causing the hair to fall out and looks like scabs. The best treatment is only to wash it often and see if his condition improves.

It sounds like your cat has an allergy, and my first guess as to cause is fleas, since it's flea season, and secondly, a food allergy. I'd put him on a quality flea product (frontline or advantage) and if it doesn't start to improve, take him to his veterinarian who will go from there! Good luck!

Listen to Diego!! I use Advantage on my cats, and they are flea free!
