I desire, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument; also that the women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing, not with their hair braided, or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, but with good works, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God. Let a woman learn in silence with full submission. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to keep silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing, provided they continue in faith and love and holiness, with modesty. [1 Timothy, chapter 2]

so much for equality...

Isn't the bible the word of God? Isn't it what he expects us to live by, exactly as it is written?(amom)

That's why I don't think the Bible was written by God. Because if God gives women minds and talents and everything a man has (except for the same body parts) then why wouldn't He want us to use them? Why would he give us independent thought and then tell us not to exercise that ability? It doesn't make sense, and if He really DID write that, then I don't want any part in that God.

I think that what it says in the Bible, that passage, is just something written by men who wanted more power and feared the hold women have over men (i.e. sex). By writing this in, they make women seem evil therefore they create more power for themselves.

I'm a Roman Catholic, and even my parish's priest warned us not to take the Bible literally. Much of the Bible was written long after Jesus died, anyway. Obviously, the church has come a long way since His time. It's possible that we will have female priests in the far future, but I don't think we'll have any soon. To answer the question: NO, men are not better than women. Better at chopping wood, maybe...but not, as a whole, better.

Yep, that's exactly what it says. Glad I'm not a Christian, or I'd have to behave like a 2nd class citizen, if I'm to be a true Christian.

In the Baha'i Faith, women and men are equal in the eyes of God. We believe in the emancipation of women, and in their full rights as human beings. Inequality retards not only the advancement of women, but of civilization itself. We are not required to obey husbands, women are respected and cherished. The only restriction is that women cannot be in combat, or have any occupation that requires the taking of life (like an executioner, as an extreme example). Women are life-giving creatures, so it's like choosing between two evils... if we have to choose someone to take a life (let's say in war), better men than women to do that. The station of woman is SO LOFTY because they are life-giving creatures, that taking a life is way beneath them. Not saying that men are life-taking creatures, but it's the better of the two.

Women and men are like two wings of a dove. There are not two right wings, nor two left wings. There are one right and one left wing. They are different, but equal. They must both be equally strong for the bird to fly.

OK sorry but that's the old testament rules. In the days of the early Bible and early Church, men were deathly afraid of women. The fact that women bore children. and became"unclean" every month intimidated them. So they decided that they needed power too and the way to do that was to put women in an inferior position. And then write it down so that it is the word of God. Sorry guys but Jesus loved women. He listened to them and asked them questions and valued them as people. Too bad Christian and all men don't follow his example

Better at what?

Equality? We aren't equal.

Women are better than men...
at being sympathetic...
at nurturing...
at mothering...
among other things.

Men are better than women...
at arguing (reasoning)...
at hunting...
at fathering...
at fighting...
among other things.

Did you mean to ask, are men given authority over women? (That is to say, the husband over his wife and the father over his daughters.)

Either way, keep in mind that authority doesn't come without increased responsibility. It can be as much of a burden as anything.

If you want social equality, don't forget that men and women should play sports together in the same league. Including inter-gender heavy-weight boxing.

Holyfield vs. Oprah. They're equals.

Timothy, the author, obviously is an idiot ! Who's to say that the book of Timothy is an example of what people shouldn't be. There's supposed to be something to learn in every book of the Bible, but, it doesn't say to believe everything as a positive lesson.

God is no respector of persons he made Eve from the rib to be a helpmeet to him not a bone from the foot to be his door mat. You have taken that scripture out of context when you read in 1Corint about the woman being silent in the church and learn from their husbands it was referring to speaking in tongues that is all the whole chapter is about. And submission doesn't mean subserviant submission in the hebrew and greek basically means not to be aguementative and to help keep the peace. The woman was decieved because she wasn't told directly by God not to eat of the fruit she was told by Adam. At least Eve was tempted by the serpent. Adam ate freely and willingly. In Roman 5 starting with verse 12 " Wherefore as by 1MAN SIN ENTERED INTO THE WORLD AND DEATH BY SIN PASSED UPON ALL MEN FOR ALL HAVE SINNED the in verse 14 nevertheless death reigned form Adam to Moses even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of ADAMS TRANSGRESSION (not eve's) Eve's punishment was pain during childbirth. And in 1 timothy her silence means quietness that means not to be loud. I agree women don't need to preach. Except in this scripture they are talking about SAVED MEN. I don't have to be in submission to any man except Christ and My pastor and My husband i am a woman who is head over alot of men in my company just as Debra was a judge and she was elected by God. So God loves each of us and has put worship in all of our hearts.

your quote does not mean that man is better than woman. It simply describes the roles for each. Further reading in that same book, The Bible, will also tell you that all men are created equal.

Well, the Christian's god says so. But most ignore that particular aspect of their deity, being far more drawn to the "we're saved, they're not" aspect.

The Bible is truth. It never seeks to be politically correct.
