If you don't call to explain, asap, they'll issue a warrant for your arrest and bring you in.

Missed Jury Duty

There is a scam going around right now where the bad guys steal your identity by calling you at home and saying you missed jury duty. You then say but you never got the notice and they say they are the clerk of the court and if you give them your social security number they will check and get back to you. Next thing you know your identity is gone.
Now to answer your question, depends on how mad the judge is that day. The judge can put you in jail for contempt of court, fine you, and make you attend the next session. And that is if the judge is in a good mood. Depending on the state, they can take your voting privileges away, make you give up your drivers license or any other state licenses you have. It really is up to the judge

RE:
what happens if you miss jury duty?

It depends on your location. Here in California, we have a 1-Day or 1-Jury system. Everyone is required to serve either one-day of hanging around waiting to be called for a jury, or get on one jury. For that reason everyone is called, and everyone is expected to serve. No excuses for anyone of any kind for any reason. Nobody cares how busy or sick you are. Even judges and mayors have to go. Once you are there, if you get called to a jury, they will have lots of potential reasons to excuse you. They go through a big long process asking you questions (usually longer than the trail!).

Your first notice allows you to put it off or schedule it – even move it to a courthouse more convenient to you. The second notice (if you ignored the first) is a summons to appear before the judge and explain why you didn’t show up. You will probably get a nasty lecture. The third notice is a warrant. If you don’t appear, you will be arrested. You go before the judge and are fined, possibly given time, and probably have to still serve Jury Duty.

If you missed, call the number ASAP or go to the courthouse. The longer you wait, the more trouble you will be in.

by "miss" you mean, skip. It's an arrestable offense (not serious). You might want to call the clerk's office and have a little chat with them about options.

You get thrown in a gulag and whipped.

Nah, just call and apologize. They'll reschedule you.

People do it all the time.
