I had less than 12 hours when I went with some girlfriends. I wish I could have seen more but we had a blast. We stayed at the Marriott right by Ground Zero. We went to GZ and ate at the Deli that was turned into a triage center. We met some of the firefighters in the firehouse right there also. Went to Battery Park and took pictures of the eternal flame that burns for those fallen. Kind of a sobering experience really. We walked up to Canal Street and did some "shopping". That is an experience all in itself. We walked down Wall Street on our way back to the hotel and looked at the buildings. Then we took the subway uptown and ate at a place just a few blocks off of Times Square. We went by Rockafeller Center and it was so neat at night with all of the lights on. Times Square is something to see after dark. We didn't have time to do a daytime trip to see the Statue of Liberty so we rode the Staten Island Ferry at 4am (it's free) and got some great pictures of Lady Liberty with a great zoom lens camera and fast film. Once again, looks pretty cool at night all lit up. By the time we came back on the Ferry the sun was coming up and lit up the whole NY skyline and got great pictures of that. Ended up taking the subway back up to Grand Central Station and that is a building you want to see in person. Very cool architecture. I wish I could have seen Central Park but we ran out of time. I don't know that you can really have a bad time there. Have fun!

Here are some places to go: Go to Ground Zero, so you can see first hand the monstracity and realized what (at least) I thought we went to war for (as opposed to oil.)
Then, get a ride on the carriages around Central Park. It will cost about $54 and, I think $10 for each additional mile or something.
there, they can show you where the Dakota is (where Lennon lived) Strawberry Fields, Metropolitan Museum, the Great Lawn.
Another place, Rockafella Center where they tape SNL (Saturday Night Live) or take a tour inside the Empire State Building with a tour guide. There are also red double-decker tour buses. i do not know how much this cost, but, they do take cards and you can pay right there. do not worry about finding them; they will find you. These are people who wear a red vest and have flyers on sight seeing. They will show you all the buildings and give you a brief history. They may take you uptown to Harlem where the Apollo is, cross over to the glamorous East Side, show you Midtown with the great neon lights (it is better for that at night), Gracie Mansion, and everywhere else in between (do not be too surprised if you hit upon a parade, they celebrate EVERYTHING! LOL) Oh, I forgot, in Central Park you have two options: the carriage ride ($54) or the bicyle transporters (guys and gals who will show you around the park on a bike that is pulling along a nice seat for up to three people four, if it is a couple of children. Do not know price.) You can see them out on Columbus Circle and Central Park (where that famous globe is at. on your right, Trump Towers) They will come to you, show you exactly all the sights they are going to show you, and you pay there.
Well, there are a lot more, but, you have to read this and everyone else answer or suggestions. Hope you enjoy NewYork!

Here are some ideas of what you can do. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:
Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.
UPPER WEST SIDE:
Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,
Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
MIDTOWN:
Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Museum of Modern Art
Sony Bldg
Rockefeller Center
Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!
Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.
Empire State Bldg.
The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.
CHELSEA:
Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.
WALL ST:
Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.
THE VILLAGE:
Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers
SOHO:
Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse!
These should put an awesome smile on your face. Bring your camera and takes lots of photos to remember your trip. You'll have a blast! OH...BUY this weekly magazine: TIMEOUT NEW YORK on any newstand to see what's going on each week/day. :)

Chinatown, Time Square and Central Park. You can rent a bicyclist that can carry 2 people to take you all over central park for between 40 and 50 dollars. That way you can see everything in a day and the cyclist will stop for you to take pics. Little Italy if you have the time all are picture worthy. Have Fun

Only go to one muesum...I suggest the MoMa because they usually have good exhibits and walk through Central park if nature is your thing.
Then go DOWNTOWN and STAY THERE. You can do all your shopping there and its not all brand names (although they do have it) and it has a more funky feel to it. The best resturants are downtown also (Balthazar is my favorite at the moment). Then you go up to the 20s and probably find a good bar/club.
If your going to stay uptown and want to do some shopping I dont recommend going to midtown because its ALWAYS crowded and the horses carry the smell for miles. Try boutiques on the upper east side. And if your going to the West Side, Columbus is BORING. Stay on Broadway/Amsterdam for good resturants.

i would go to The empire State building(if you don't mind waiting in line for 2 hours) but there are passes if you want to skip the line i think they are 14$ more but i would get that. Or i would recommend the night line cruise it takes you around Manhattan i think. I would also go to time square if you want to get a look at the night life but be careful if you go by yourself anywhere at night. It is really fun there and i hope you have fun in NYC!

Hello, Pat B.
I got good ideas, and recommend you as follows:
1. If you want to go skating: visit Rockefeller Center named by Mr. John D Rockefeller and enjoy skating and watching a beautiful Christmas tree in winter time (Dec-Jan), also in summer, a lot of events are held in the open space area.
2. If you are just in mood for walking and running in autumn: visit and walk/jog in the Central Park. For further information, Visitor Center - www.centralpark.org
3. If you want to go see arts in museum: visit MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), you can spend your time all day long, enjoying arts and great materials. (No photos, but in your sight. Tue/Wed closed.)
4. If you want to go back to your childhood: visit the 'Fao Schwaltz' a fantastic toy shop (closed once but open again just in front of the Apple shop).
5. If you feel like go shopping: visit the Fifth Ave. Please don't spend too much money, warning lol
6. If you want to view Manhattan: join a cruising tour (daytime but be careful at night) or a helicopter tour. www.worldyacht.com
I just want to add this information, please remember that there're great fire fighters in NYC. They are always brave and great heroes forever!
OK, have a great time in NYC, and tell me how you like it. :-)
Cheers!

see the sights... you have to... and don't waste your time with "ground zero" it is just a concrete whole now... oh and you can see the statue of liberty just fine from battery park or the brooklyn bridge... don't waste your time on any of the tour boats... if you want to get up close jump on the staten island ferry but, it is really just a statue... though you do get a good skyline from the ferry... it's cheap, but it takes a while to go and come backl...
Awesome view though from the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge get on the manhattan side and walk half-way across without looking back... then turn around, it'll knock your socks off the first time....
times square... of course...
wanderring around midtown is ok..
i dunno, hope some of that helps....
Oh yeah china town / little italy (mulberry street) for sure... Canal street for knock-off merch.
lower east side has good food and bars if you're looking for that...
