A good place to start is at http://www.cyndislist.com you will find a lot of very useful links to free genealogy sites here. Some others that I have found useful are:
http://www.usgenweb.org
http://www.worldgenweb.org
http://www.ellisisland.org
http://www.rootsweb.com
Also there are free message boards at Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com where you can contact others researching the same family names.

The website below is a FREE website available to people doing their genealogical work. In fact, most of the pay sites get their FREE information from this site and organize it for their own sites.

You should find a page for your family name on Genforum: www.genforum.com.
Also check out www.familysearch.org
www.usgenweb.org
www.rootsweb.com
Also, you don't mention your ethnic heritage, but there are sites like Genlias (Dutch), PRDH (French-Canadian), GenPol (Poland) that will help you, too.
Depending on when your family arrived in this country, you can either try www.ellisisland.org (1892-1920) or www.castlegarden.org (1830-1900-ish).

Try Google, they can help with finding ancestors, and if I remember it's free.
I've also heard that you can get a debit card from Western Union, with cash.
http://www.westernunion.com/info/osPrepaidMC.asp
You can pay for an Ancestry.com membership monthly, instead of yearly.

I have had moderate success with Ancestory.Com and Familysearch.com (owned by Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints).

www.familysearch.org, but stay away from the Ancestral files, they aren't always reliable.
