I don't cut my hair for years at a time. It grows to a smidgen over shoulder length then stops. It never gets any longer. When it has been cut in the past it always grew back to the same length and then stopped. How does it know?

Basically hair is produced by follicles (which are tiny organs in the skin) and they grow on a 3 stage cycle.
The longest growing period (which is when the hair grows fastest) is called ANAGEN.
CATAGEN is a shorter cycle, when the growth slows down.
TALOGEN is the rest period, basically when the shedding of hair is induced.
Different parts of the body spend different amounts of time in each cycle and of course it varies from person to person.

The scalp can spend as long as 4 to 8 years in anagen before catagen begins, but will only spend a maximum of just four months in talogen before anagen starts again.
The hairs on the arms and legs spend a lot less time in anagen (usually as little as a month every year, and thats why they do not grow so much.

So i presume for you that by the time youre hair grows to you shoulders is the position where the talogen stage starts and thus it grows less or not at all.

Hope that helps.

It doesn't. All hair grows for a while, and then falls out and is replaced. The hair on your head grows for the longest time, but even it eventually falls out and is replaced. Most bodily hair is replaced much more quickly, so does not get as long.

Each person's hair only has a certain 'lifespan' and then it falls out. Your hair will only grow as long as it can during it's lifespan and then fall out. Each person's hair has a different lifespan that is why different people can grow their hair to different lengths.

i think the brain.. or what ever controls hair growth... determains by the weight of the hair. it pull on the skulp.. so if the head can't take it then it just stops growing. thats what the family doc said.
