I have an 18 day old chicken egg that might hatch this friday! or later on. I have it in a homemade incubator the main heat source is a heating pad. I can't change the heat setting since it doesn't have a control.

My folks have to go shopping today and pick up my older sister from work.

I CAN'T leave the heating pad on while we're gone, someone suggested using a 40 or 60 watt bulb to keep the egg warm.

I have a 15 watt bulb that gets just as warm but what I wanted to know is if I leave the bulb on with the egg on a towel to retain heat with the towel catch on fire by any chance?

Please answer!

I might be leaving soon and I don't want to lose this egg if its possibly alive.

Oh and by the way I DON'T have a chicken to keep the egg warm. I live in townhouse complex in Las Vegas.

as long as you have a good 8-10 inches seperating the towel from the bulb, you should be okay. When you get home, you can move it closer. The short time with the cooler temp won't kill the embryo :-)

Don't leave any heat source touching any cloth without supervision. You also have to rotate the egg slightly every so many hours. A light bulb can work. Check the internet for answers too.

Hire a chicken to babysit the egg.
