German and English, a little French.
However, I am not for English "only" and havn't heard of anyone who is. I am for it as an official language, but that just memorializes what we have, essentially. I think people moving to another country should try to assimilate, but not discard their own language and culture.

We may also learn from language that no one group of people is superior to another, for there is no such thing as an inferior language
However, when there are animosities between nations and ethnic or cultural groups, language ceases to be a bridge. It can become a wall that adds to the divisions between people.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, English is now spoken as a primary or a secondary language by 1 person in 7. Thus, it is the most widely used lingua franca in the world. People's use of it has allowed for wider communication and the exchange of beneficial information.

On the other hand, linguistic walls have contributed to division, hatred, and war. The World Book Encyclopedia states: "If all peoples spoke the same tongue, . . .goodwill would increase between countries."
Encyclopedia Britannica explains about Sumerian, the oldest known written language: "The Sumerian verb, with its . . .various prefixes, infixes, and suffixes, presents a very complicated picture."
Throughout History two language in one country only divide and break that country down. One language always unites.
Read the last line--now you know there is a reason don't say no one ever told you!

I speak only one which is English but then I'm an American and that is the language that America speaks. Different countries speak differ languages. France it's French, Germany it's German, Mexico it's Spanish. Why do people think America should change their language? What would happen if we decided to change Mexico so it would now speak English or that all it's documents be printed in both Spanish, English, french, German, etc. English only laws are good for America. I think if you were born in America and your white then your an white American, if black then black American, if brown then brown American, if red then (possibly a true) red American. But what ever the color your an American period.

Two, working on three. I speak English, Japanese, and am learning Spanish. My goal is to learn 5 languages. I will probably choose Chinese for the fourth, I don't know about the 5th yet.

I speak one, can understand 3 (4 on a good day). If I went to your country, you'd expect me to speak the language of the people and knowing I wasn't in a place that spoke my language natively, I would try everything to do so. I only ask you do the same.

I speak English, only.
Do you know why?
My parents speak english, my grandparents spoke english, their predecessors spoke english.
Why should I have to learn another language to live in the country that I was born in? If I am a guest in another country, I'll do my best to learn their language.
Why are my family's traditions downplayed simply because it's the politically correct flavor of the month to support the illegal immigrants?

the president supports english only yet butchers it everytime he speaks...he cant correctly pronounce his middle initial and idiots nationwide celebrate..."yee haw, he said dubya...thats my kind of leader" ....anyways, i would assume that most people who support english only would speak english only (hince their support)...perhaps a few [linguists?] are out there that would support such laws; maybe they're a racist, maybe they feel that's what's right for the nation, who knows....in the end, not mant....as far as i go, personally i dont believe that an american high school student should be required to pass 2 years of a foreign language course in order to graduate....thats like forcing an airplane mechanic to be able to fix a space shuttle (some spanish, some italian, some latin...i've been teaching myself italian and latin)

We speak 2 languages in our home, English is the primary language, Spanish being the second. I do believe if you want to work here and be a part of our society you need to learn and speak English. As it was my husband did not want our daughter to learn Spanish because he did nor want people branding her a Mexican. I am proud of my little girl and I want her to be proud of her heritages, both of her parents cultures not just mine.
