Well, kissing the Pope would be a little extreme; anyway, I think it was originally a gesture of humility given to royalty, so it shows a lot of respect

I think it is an old world sign of respect that is/was reserved for royalty and important people. If also seems a bit Italian/ "Godfatherish" doesn't it?!

it's supposed to be out of respect for royalty. funny though that he;s a man, appointed by other men to be gods token figurehead. i see no royalty in him at all. he is simply another man.
