Ok, I'm about to be a senior in high school and I know all about the military academies. I'd like to know what my chances are of getting a nomination from a senator or representative and making it in to ANY of the academies.

My GPA is 4.4 and I'm very active in my schools Junior ROTC where I've had leadership positions. I participate in the sports of football and wrestling and I was captain of the wrestling team this year. I've had summer jobs of lifeguarding and farming. I don't have any community service hours or any thing like that (any suggestions for things to go on my application would be helpful). I don't think theres too many people that would know the answer to this question but I'm dying to know. Thanks to any1 who can help.

Being at the Air Force Academy and having gone through that, I'd say that it honestly all has to do with luck. I didn't have the best of everything in terms of grades going into my senior year, but I was nominated by a Congressman and a Senator. It all has to do with who you're up against. If that's your dream and you don't make it the first time, just go to a community college for a year and try again, the competition might not be as stiff the second time around. You've got a good resume though, so just try your best and keep up your grades. In instances like this, politicians tend to be very fair because they want the best from their districts and state to be represented, it makes them look better.

Seems you have the right stuff and there is some good advise here. I would only add that like any good military man, you should have a "fall back plan". Go full speed ahead with your search for a slot at an Academy, but remember they are some of the hardest schools in the world to get into. Have a plan in case you do not get in.

For acceptance into a military academy, you will have to pass a Candidate Fitness Assessment among other things. The CFA test has six parts: basketball throw, mile run, shuttle run, sit ups, pull ups, push ups The Academies post average and maximum scores for those tests. Good luck with your future endeavors.

Well, it looks like you are headed in the right direction. Start volunteering for comunity service projects, that is looked upon well. Also, contact your State Governor, U.S. Senator, and U.S. congressman, and express your interest in an appointment, but try to narrow down which accademy you'd like to attend. I would reccomend the Coast Guard Accademy, as few people living away from the coast are aware it even exists, therefore improving your chances. Upon Graduation, you can request a commission in the Navy if you want. I also don't mean to sound racist, but if you have any minority blood in you, use it to your advantage.

The grades and all are good, but the nomination is key! Contact both of your state's senators, as well as your house representative and get moving on it! You'll probably have to wade through some staffers and you may or may not get to the "big guy" but keep pushing. They all have their own procedures for deciding who gets a nomination, but perseverance WILL work in your favor!

Sounds like you have a really good chance. For community service I would check and see if there is some sort of Hospice care service where you live. Boys and Girls clubs are always looking for volunteers around your age. And younger kids would love to have some interaction with people your age.

If you are in the ROTC program at your high school, talk to the head of the program about going to any of the Military Academies and they will steer you in the right direction.

I think you have an excellent chance. Contact or have your JROTC commander contact one of your local representatives (senator or congressperson) and show them your record. They would be happy to write a letter for you. Best of luck. You'll be getting your college degree the hard way. But you'll reap the benefits for life. Good for you!

You've got a good start with that GPA. Contact your U.S. representative and explore with him/her the possibility of a nomination. Check out the web sites for their admission requirements. Good luck.

Your chances are probably quite good for getting a nomination from your state senators and/or governor. If you can pass the physical, you will probably get in.
