Bittorrent is a program used to download the contents of torrents. Torrents are a type of file that allows users to download programs, movies, music, games, ect. anything can pretty much be turned into a torrent. When you download a torrent, Bittorent connects to other users and begins to downlaod the actual file.

Basically, say you wanted to download Windows XP. What you would do, is get the torrent from some site, such as www.torrentspy.com, and open the torrent with Bittorent. Bittorent would then connect to seeders (people who have the complete file), and leachers/peers (people who are also downloading the files), and start downlaoding Windows XP. Bittorent would get the information from a bunch of different people until the file(s) have been completely downlaoded. Then, you have your very own copy of Windows XP. You can, of course, downlaod anything you want, not just Windows XP.

Bittorent and simialr programs can be illegal depending on how you use them. As with all P2P programs, it is legal to use as long as you own a copy or have purchased whatever you are downloading. It is also legal if the files you are downlaoding do not require you to pay anything (freeware). But, if you downlaod things that you do not own, or have not purchased, then it is illegal.

Good luck, and hope this helps --
