there is no missing dollar
the three paid $30, and the clerk gave the bell hop $5 to give back, meaning they paid 25 for the room. he gave each man $1, and kept 2 for himself.
25 for room
+3 returned
+2 stolen
=30
OR
they each paid nine for the room, and got a dollar back from the bellhop
9 x 3= 27 paid for the room
3 x 1= 3 refunded
27+3= 30

How cares that the bell hope kept $2... They salesmen still over paid for their room, a $25 dollar room for $27 dollars?
What the manager should have done is changed each man $8.34 (because you always round up with money), Then given the bell hop 3 sets of $1.66 for the 3 men.
But that's OK the manager was fired the next day for over changing for the room anyway.

It doesn't really drive you nuts.... not unless you're overthinking. lol there is no missing dollar. If the room was $25 and not $30 and the bellhop gave back a dollar each to the three men and kept the two dollars for himself which all together is five dollars.
30-25= 5 i THINK all that extra info at the end was to mess with our heads.....I THINK lol

There is no other dollar. The three salesmen originally pay $30 and are then given $3 back, making $27. The boy then keeps $2 of those $27 leaving $25...the cost of the room.

they only paid $27.. the original $25 and the bell hops $2...25+2=27...plus each salesman $1 equals 30! you did your math wrong

no
it all adds up, you are just using the wrong signs
they paid $25 for the room
they each paid $9
9 x 3 = 27
however the stolen 2 dollars is not added on but subtracted
27-2=$25
the amount they paid for the room

, there is no missing dollar. Simply put, people get confused between the $3 returned to the ladies and the $2 in the waiter's pocket.
