Okay, it seems like the Yahoo Answers "Immigration" crowd is firmly divided into two camps. Are we really doing anything anymore (on either side) besides alternating between "preaching to the choir" and venting at people on the other side when they say something inflammatory?
It doesn't seem like one side listens to the other at all, so why are we bothering?

This is GREAT! It's like those cartoons with the Wolf and the Sheepdog- "Mornin', Ralph." "Mornin', Sam." They talk about life and their families, then they clock back in and try to pound the snot out of each other at their "job".

It's not a Mexican standoff. The pro illegal crowd are losing, they just haven't acknowledged it yet. Truth and justice always prevails in America.

Well I think everyone could try to see the other side of the issue. I need to remind myself that we have a firm history of racism in this country and that type of ignorance doesn't go away over night. I think those with more liberal views forget that racism is usually stoked with fear, a powerful emotional tool. Think of being afraid, it's not a nice feeling, and it can cause you to lash out.

I keep in mind what a guy in construction told me about the Labor market in San Francisco now that there are so many Mexican and Chinese construction workers. He said he gets paid about half what he made in 1985 to do floors these days. He's a good guy and not a xenophobe but he's being hurt by cheap immigrant labor.

You can't blame the immigrants either, they are only doing the best they can after being born in a country with fewer resources and opportunities than in the US. We need to remember that these people are just like us, they have families, jobs, houses, and everyday problems like you and me. Those with more conservative views on the immigration issue need to remember that these people are not "Illegal" in the sense that fraud is illegal. These are people who happen to live in this country, just as millions of others do, who technically did not enter the country by all the rules. They live day in, day out, go to work, buy products and contribute to their communities. If Bush had his way, they would all be granted guest worker status and live without the label illegal. It is a policy that makes them "illegal" not anything about them personally. If they decided to commit a crime (like jaywalking or theft) they could be caught and then they should be prosecuted. Most just want an honest wage for honest work, is that really ruining our country?

I think the asker is right though, it all seems like a tug of war at times with no intellectual progress. Perhaps we need to brainstorm a third option(or more). Perhaps we need to find a way to protect American workers (and wages) without deporting millions of people (as if this is even a reasonable solution). If everyone, no matter what country they were born in, had to join the same union to get ANY kind of job, wages could not be undercut, and everyone gets a fair price for his or her days work. This is just one idea. I think we can come up with more.

It seems like it...but it can also seem like it on the issue of religion, politics, pre-marital sex, abortion, child raising...actually everything on here. The good news is that there are some people who may be listening, contributing great new points, and thinking about the issues as a result of someone's comments.
We are bothering for the sake of those precious few who can still be convinced either way, and listen rationally. At least I am, because they are a wonderful and rare treasure.

I do it in between other things-its entertaining.

Did you think we were going to change any thing here? You must be disappointed than.
Besides I have made some good friends from all over -One very good friend who I talk to regularly almost daily not just on this issue but many. And they are from another country. You never know what you can reap from even a nonsense board like Yahoo.

Oh hayleylov--what a description-I hope not--now their is an answer that stops people dead in your tracts on posts. Love it!

You are correct, sir...

However, a simple statistical analysis of a random sampling of 100 answers regarding illegal immigration yielded the following results:

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION:

Those FOR: 17%
Those NEUTRAL: 13%
Those AGAINST: 70%

I don't believe this ratio has vacillated much since it became an issue so, you are right: Why bother?

Besides, even IF the 'FORs' could get ALL of the 'NEUTRALs' to come to there camp, the 'AGAINSTs' camp would still outnumber them by over 2 to 1; ...seems to me the fight is over...

Good point, why are we bothering? Let me recall the pledge of allegiance, One Nation Under God We are all equal under God correct? Apparently there are those that think they are SO much better than everybody else. It is not for us to decide. More hardship and grief is going to become of all this. All it is doing is growing more hate, we already have to much racism going on. There will always be 2 sides to every story, but no one takes a moment to listen. It is a losing battle.

That is what is seems like, but the reality is that there are people that listen, and many people that dont know which side to choose and those people are the ones who listen most. I think what needs to be remembers is that this issue overall is about human rights. The human right to leave where you chose or not, the human right to work, to eat, to play, to learn, to vent, and to preach.....

Good question. I think it's about the disrespect in how the anti group describes the pro group, who are not really about breaking the law, but about reminding the anti's that playing with landmines and genocide is not the way either. Interestingly enough, the anti group does not show much reasoning either. There is no debate here. Too much ignorance and intolerance.

Julie makes a good point. Regardless of the forum, the message is important. I don't care it is bumper stickers, notes on a telephone pole, or (and I advise this) letters to you Congressman and Senator. The American citizens are mad . Mad at illegal aliens. Race has nothing to do with it. Keep up the fight and keep up the pressure. That is the only way it will change.
