It could be that you have TMJ. TMJ stands for the temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ), the joint where the mandible (the lower jaw) joins the temporal bone of the skull, immediately in front of the ear on each side of your head. If it is caught early, it will probably respond to resting the muscles and joints by eating soft foods, not chewing gum, avoiding clenching or tensing, and relaxing muscles with moist heat (1/2 hour at least twice daily). Relaxation techniques and stress reduction, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants or other medications may be indicated in a dose your doctor recommends. Other therapies may include fabrication of an occlusal splint to prevent wear and tear on the joint. Improving the alignment of the upper and lower teeth and surgical options are available for advanced cases. After diagnosis, your doctor may suggest further consultation with your dentist and oral surgeon to facilitate effective management of TMJ dysfunction. You can read more about it here

Another possibility is infection on the back teeth (one of the molars) where old root canals had been carried out in the past...any swelling on gum should never be ignored...I have read one story where dental infection/bacteria eroded someone's jaw. Rush to a dentist may be a great help! Clicking jaws may have several underlying causes.......the problem could be compounded e.g. lack of dental hygene, tooth decay, infection into the jaw etc. best to get an expert opinion as x-ray would normally show what goes on than us assuming............

Sounds like TMJ (temporal mandibular joint). There is a small wedge of cartilidge near where your upper and lower mandibles meet. Sometimes that cartilidge gets wedged between the two bones. That causes the clicking sound you hear. Sometimes your jaw can lock in the open position for a bit. I have that problem ocassionally.

TMJ? Have you been to your dentist? I went to the doctor for an earache once, and he said I have TMJ. My jaw pops when I chew, sometimes it feels like it pops completely out of place, sometimes it will be sore for a few days. TMJ is some kind of wearing of the jaw bone and it can be treated. Good luck.

The same thing happened to me.... then after 2 years or so I developed TMJ which is arthritis in your jaw joint. I know arthritis seems like something that you don't get until your older, but I am 23 and have it. You may be clenching or grinding your teeth when you sleep and not know it. The only thing you can really do is get a mouth guard to wear when you sleep. Go to your dentist and explain whats going on.

My jaw clicks all the time too, chances are its not TMJ, perhaps you've been under some stress lately and are clenching your teeth at night. If not it's worth getting it checked out

it's perfectly normal if its just a little. if it is overly painful or if it is difficult to do normal things, you should consult a dentist
