A tool which will pick up lectures even when sitting at the back of the auditoriam (not by choice) or can be equally useful for tutorials when allowed?

Minidisc Recorder with a Stereo mic'.. you will pick one up on Ebay for peanuts.. and download a user guide from Minidisc.com

I don't mean to be funny but you really shouldn't be recording lectures. You should be developing your OWN notes in your own words and use textbooks to check the accuracy of your work. Learning is so much more fun when you do the groundwork. The lecturers just guide you through the syllabus and tell you what you need to revise - don't rely too heavily on them.

A mini disc recorder by Sony. Kind of hard to find and
use a PC microphone for the input device.

I use to use this to record my acoustic preformances
in smaller theathers etc. works great.
