Both the Reserves and the National Guard are made up of part time soldiers with a core of full timers. The Reserves are Federal forces and the National Guard belong to the respective states.
The Reserves tend to be support people, admin, bands etc. The Guard tend to be combat troops. So......
As a member of the National Guard, if you want to shovel paper from the in box to the out box then go into the Reserves. If you want to fight in the War on Terror give me an email back.

Reserves are run by federal government, and guard is run by state. The guard and reserves are basically 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer, but the difference is that the guard can be called up in times of national emergencies such as Hurricane Katrina.
You CAN and WILL be called up for overseas deployment most likely, if u join either one.

The National Guard is a full time job. In peace time they are responsible for guarding our nation and assist in state of emergency situation. The reserves is part-time (1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year) and are called up to full time duty when needed. Both groups have basic training. Training beyond basic depends on what field you are in or position you hold. Both branches of the military currently have troops on active duty in Iraq.

National Guard (both Army and Air) work for the State Governors and do domestic emergencies ie. Katrina... etc.(except in the case of Iraq). Thank you President Clinton for cutting our forces this deep. Reserves work for the Feds and are what they say they are "reserve military". Typically reserves are the first to go when a deployment is needed. Basic training was the same in the Air Force, and tech school was dependent on the specialty.

The basic difference is that the National Guard is available for state emergencies in peacetime.
The reason for both to exist is to provide trained and fully formed military units for overseas combat.
