Yep, places of worship are tax exempt. And this fact is abused by some. For example, among orthodox hasidic communities it is not uncommon for some homeowners to convert their garages into a "place of worship" and them apply for tax exemption. Not exactly fair, but then again, religions rarely act fairly, not matter what they claim.
