I like Cockatiels because they are not to small but they are not overly large plus they can talk and love to fly, mine likes to fly in front of the glass door to tease the dog.

It depends on your lifestyle and how much time you have to spend with your pet.

I have a beautiful Umbrella Cockatoo, but she is like having another child, she needs a lot of attention and care. If you get a bird like this then you are in for a long term commitment, my bird can live longer than 70 years. A bird like this could develop many problems if not taken care of properly, as a flock bird she needs company to interact with and could start feather pulling/self mutilating, if needs are not met. Oh, also many birds can be destructive to your home and furniture, lol. I give my bird lots of wood to chew and toys but she still has taken a chunk out of my wood coffee table and I have a favorite chair that she has chewed up.

I would visit some online bird sites, try putting some types you are considering into a search engine and find out what is involved. If you are considering a high maintenance/large bird, please take time to look up stories about these beautiful animals and what happens to them when they are neglected and abused.

Good luck

A budgie...ie parakeet is always the perfect bird to start with. If you buy them young enough you can tame them. They live maybe 10-14 years and are easy enough to keep.
The larger parrots need tons of attention and can cost thousands of dollars. They also live 80 years + so that is a HUGE commitment. Start small and once you know that birds are for you move up from there. :o)

GO NO FURTHER: I totally agree with SARA and SOMEONESOMEWHERE answers with only minor differences. You are much too young to consider a parrot. They do indeed need a lot of your time and at your age it would be a disaster for any large bird you might pick; not to underestimate the cost involved. A nice parakeet is what you need to begin...they have nice personalities and require much less care.
(not that you can dismiss any of their needs.)
Caring for a pet is a 24/7 responsibility and you have to decide if you are ready for the commitment. (What will you do when you go to college?)

I purchased a GREEN CHEEK for my grandson and it was way too much for him to keep up with. I have had Gus for almost two years and I love him as my child. My biggest concern is who will care for him when I am gone! I am training others how to care for and love him as I do. Good luck!

I have a Cockatiel and they are pretty cool. They are social (especially if you buy one that has been hand raised) and you can teach them how to talk.
Love Birds are a lot of fun too, but can be trouble makers as well. A friend of mine raises Love Birds and they really can be a lot of fun.

Parakeets are nice. They are only supposed to live for 7years if an adult but I had one since she was born and she lived almost 11 1/2 years, they sing and fly(my room was her cage and her real cage was her room) she was my Best friend she died last may, but I know have a Pomeranian(breed of dog) and she's nice but my parakeet was the best

I got a parakeet for my first bird. They're pretty friendly towards humans. And chatter ALOT. They're really crazy and fun to have around.

A bird for anybody is best dtermined in what kind of personality you want in a bird, and what you can reasonably afford.

Do you want the bird to be big or small?
Do you want it to be a talented talker
Do you want it to be playful or more independant?
Do you want it to be loud or quiet?
Do you mind mess?
Can you provide 2 hours of one on one physical contact, and attention giving every single day.
Is lifespan an issue?

Great first birds:

1. Caique- they are 10 inches long and love to play rough and love to be touched, but are happy to entertain themselves while your not home, they love attention and rough play and usually arent afraid of strangers, they are condidered one of the best birds for little kids, and beginners. they can be moderatly loud, they usually cost $750, they cant talk very well. they can live for 30 years

2. Conure- they range from 10-18 inches depending on the sppecie, all of them are loud to moderatly loud, their personality, and behavior is the same as they Caique. they cost between $150-$750 depending on the specie and color. They can be talented talker, Blue Crowned Conures are best for this. Conures live between 15-30 years depending on the specie.

3. Senegal Parrot- Are 9 inches long and have the same playful personality as the Conure, and Caique, bit are shy and are generally afraid of people they dont know unless they were raised to expect a lot of strangers coming and going. They can talk but are not good, but they are fiercly affectionate, and playful, they are generally fearless birds and arent afraqid to attack animals or birds bigger than them, so supervise them when out of the cage. They usually cost $600, they can live for 50 years

Cockatiel- They are common long lived and can learn to talk, but are phenominal whistlers. They are more relaxed then the other birds mentioned, but do enjoy having their necks scratched and playing. They can be friendly if raised that way. They can live to be 20 years old, and usually cost $125 a fancy colored one starts at $25 more than that and beyond.

Parakeet- They measure 7 inches they are common, easy to make friendly and are sold in just about very pet store. They can be friendly and can learn to talk but usually dont very well. They love to play and when not are content to entertain themselves. They usually cost between $15-$50 depending on whether hand fed or not, and what color, They can live for 15 years.

Lovebird- they are 7 inches, If HAND FED makes a wonderful pet, they love attention, and enjoy being held, NEVER BUY THEM IN PAIRS its a myth, I've had several single kept lovebirds they were way better pets than ones kept in pairs, the paired lovebirds wanted nothing to do with humans. they usually cost $150 if hand fed none hand fed are $60 hand fed are the best and are so much better pets.

Parrotlets-They are the smallest parrots they measure between 4 1/2 and 6 inches depending on the species, they are affectionate, and their behavior is th same as the lovebird.

Whatever bird you choose make sure you spend 2 hours a day at least holding, and playing woith it. and the bird spends another 2 hours playing on top of its cage, watch your bird at all times outside the cage.

Make sure you proved lots, and lots of interesting toys for the bird to play with.

In addition to the bird seed, proved lots and lots, of fresh fruits, veggies and bird safe human food.

NEVER EVER offer chocolate or avacado it WILL KILL them, so will large servings of rice, garlic, and onions. as well as cheese.
