most people like to see the accident because its interesting. and because they want to be nosy and butt-in to other peoples' business when its not theirs. maybe if people would stop doing that, traffic wouldn't be so bad...

Well, I slow down first of all for safety, then to see if it isn't someone I know, and to see if I can be of any assistance. I have been many times able to help so I think mainly that is why people slow down and also it is frightening when you see an accident..because it could have been YOU..

People slow down to look at car accidents because they want to see the damage, if they knew anyone involved, or just because they slowed down and want to see what's going on.

Dang that's one of my pet-peas; when people stop or slow down to the extreme to look at an accident on the opposing direction and the traffic on that side hasn't slowed down. I say; if you're not a doctor or know CPR, get out of the way!

I slow down to avoid running into or being run into by other cars that are slowing down. How smart is it to go 60 when the car in front of you is going 30. If I look at all it is to see the damage and to determine if anyone I know is involved.

It's natural human curiousity. Or they might think they recognize the car and are worried they might know someone in the accident. I wish they wouldn't though. When they go too slow they could end up causing an accident themselves.

I slow down to make sure I don't hit someone or something! Often there is a lot of debris, rescue vehicles, rescue personnel, and the parties involved in the accident to watch for.

I slow down to see if any of the involved parties are friends or family and to avoid debris and to follow directions of the police in charge and to not hit the car in front of me who is rubber necking

I don't know, but those people really piss me off. It's not the accidents that cause delay during rush hour traffic...it's all the nosey pricks who have to slow down and gawk.

I have no clue, it's not like they're going to get out and help, though they should. But it slows down traffic, and it's very very annoying.
