I think it is those things, but also loneliness. A person can feel lonely, and if they are ugly, or shy they might not have a signifigant other, and if they also have allergies to the typical warm fuzzy pets, they then turn to god to feel like someone cares. It's sad sometimes the reasons people have to need to believe in that dribble. cheers

Actually, theism is the result of reflection on the full spectrum of human experience. Atheists, by and large, arbitrarily choose to confine themselves to an examination of data which are congenial to their a priori assumptions.
