I'm a college graduate and im thinking of joining either branch as a Public Affairs Officer. I want to go into Public Relations and figure it would be a great work experience to work in a marketing/advertising/PR agency later. I also would like to persue an MBA as well while im in. What do you guys think?
p.s. i also wear glasses is it true that the navy gives free laser surgery? haha

I would recomend the Air Force, personally. I was in the Army Reserve during college and worked closely with all branches of the military.....the Air Force always had the nicest bases, most time off, best working conditions, etc....
You have a pretty good idea, but remember that going into the military directly as an officer can be tough (degree or not). There are a lot of people who have been in (and since recieved a college degree) who are ahead of you....but that does not mean it is impossible to do. Also be aware that there is no gaurentee of your actual job (at least in the Army). That is, unless you get it in your contract (its called training of choice). That is a lot harder to get as an officer than as an enlisted man. Your best bet would be to talk to a recruiter, but remember not to expect anything unless it is in writing (READ YOUR CONTRACT COMPLETELY BEFORE SIGNING ANYTHING!!!). Recruiters have told crazy lies to get people to join, like you get your own Hummer and they give out free laser surgery. (I have never heard that one before).
Also, given the current geopolitical climate..... the military may not be the best place to try and learn how to convince a Kurdish village that the "smart" bombs suffered a mechanical failure and the Air Force extends it's deepest sympathies.....

getting a slot as a PAO in either branch is difficult at best. Not a huge need for them at this point in time( they have plenty now) and the compettition is fierce.
All the Branches offer either Lasik or PRK( I forget which), but it's on a Space A basis and certain people get first dibs.. like Aviators. That being said, friend of ours, a Supply Corps Offcier, just had it done last Fall. It will depend on the base you are statione dat the availibility of the surgery and the surgeon, and th ewaiting list.

I am going to say Navy for the possiabley worst and dumbest reasons; Better Locations on being stationed! Such as San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington DC, NYC, etc.

IMO the only people who volunteer as PAOs are people who enjoy pain. They have to be nice to reporters, and say things that will be misrepresented or twisted out of context. Oh - and if they say something does not want to hear - they will be accused of lying.
I would recommend a combat arms job where you can at least shoot back at the enemy.

Hey its a PAO job. No real difference in eithier branch. I don't know about free laser surgery. I wish they had it when I was in however....
